Thief nabs Jesus from church manger scene
YOUNGSTOWN -- A statue of the infant Jesus was stolen from the cr & egrave;che in front of the Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church rectory during the night on Saturday.
Youngstown police report that the statue was last seen by a security guard at the church at 6:30 p.m. Christmas night.
Police received a call at 8:30 a.m. Sunday from the church that the statue was missing from the display. An investigation continues.
Local man picked upon multiple charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Carl T. Hammond, 18, of Atkinson Avenue was arrested around 1:45 a.m. Sunday after a report that he threatened his girlfriend with a rifle, police said. Officers caught up with Hammond at a house on Cornell Street, where he drove after leaving his girlfriend's on West Hylda Avenue.
Hammond was arrested on charges of driving under suspension, improper handling of a firearm in a motor vehicle, unlawful possession of a dangerous ordnance (scope rifle with the stock removed), aggravated menacing and failure to comply with a police order. He also was served with two warrants issued in August for failure to appear in municipal court on charges of loud music and improperly operating a vehicle on a temporary permit.
Lariccia, Rossellito be honored at YSU
YOUNGSTOWN -- Youngstown State University board of trustees has approved resolutions to confer honorary degrees at spring 2005 commencement on Tony Lariccia, a graduate of Struthers High School and YSU, and Dominic Rosselli, legendary YSU basketball coach.
Lariccia and his wife, Mary, have contributed to various causes throughout the Mahoning Valley, including the Andrews Student Recreation and Wellness Center at YSU.
Roselli was YSU basketball coach from 1940 to 1982, during which he took his teams to nine NCAA and four NAIA tournaments.
Two are reappointed to Weathersfield boards
MINERAL RIDGE -- Weathersfield Township trustees have reappointed Stephanie Hawout and Fred McCandless to two township zoning boards. Hawout was named to another five-year term on the township board of zoning appeals, effective Jan. 1. The term expires Dec. 31, 2009.
McCandless was renamed to the a five-year term on the zoning commission, starting Jan. 1 through Dec. 31, 2009.
Neither board met this month, but the zoning commission will meet at 6 p.m. Jan.12 to discuss an amendment to zoning laws on demolition and debris. The zoning appeals board will meet at 7 p.m. Jan. 13 to hear a conditional-permit use request.
