Local Salvation Armygives out 1,800 vouchers
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Salvation Army reports that it has distributed 1,800 food vouchers to the needy this Christmas season.
Jean Malandro, director of social services, said the vouchers, which can be used at area grocery stores, range in amount from $25 to $100, depending on the size of a family.
In addition, she noted that the Salvation Army has given toys and gifts to more than 2,800 children. That number has increased by one-third from last year.
Malandro said the organization does try to secure toy donations through its own program; however, if they do not receive enough toys for all of the children they have signed up, the Toys for Tots program of the U.S. Marine Corps. provides the remaining amount.

The award from the National Federation for Catholic Youth is the highest recognition for a diocese to confer on a youth. It is given to young people who serve their peers and youth ministry in unwavering commitment and dedication, according to the diocesan office.
The Eagle of the Cross is given annually in the Diocese of Youngstown to high school juniors and seniors who show particular zeal in the improvement of their parish youth ministry program, high school ministry teams or other ministries within the diocese.
The office ministry noted that the nominee must be a practicing Catholic and exemplify the qualities of moral integrity, prayer and spiritual life, personal outreach to church and community, contribution to parish and school programs and Christian leadership. Involvement in diocesan programs will also be considered.
Nominations may come from anyone. Each nominator must complete essay questions regarding the nominee's participation in parish and/or Catholic high school youth ministry programs, as well as providing specific examples of the qualities mentioned above.
A new requirement this year is that nominators must obtain the signature of the nominee's pastor for parish nominees, or high school principal for Catholic school nominees. Nominees in the Catholic high school category must attend a Catholic high school within the diocese.
Nominations must be received at the office ministry by Feb. 25. Nomination forms may be obtained online at http://www.doy.org/EOCNominationForm-2005.pdf.
