Pastors from around Ohio will explore the theme, "Searching for What Saves Us," guided by two scholars with extensive work in non-violent models of redemption. The event is the Ohio Council of Churches' Ohio Ministries Convocation, scheduled Jan. 24 and 25, at the Columbus Marriott North, 6500 Doubletree Avenue.
Speaking both days will be Dr. Rita Nakashima Brock, co-author of Proverbs of Ashes: Violence, Redemptive Suffering, and the Search for What Saves Us (Beacon Press, 2001.) Dr. Brock is a Visiting Scholar at the Starr King School for the Ministry, Graduate Theological Union. Her co-authored book, Casting Stones: Prostitution and Liberation in Asia and the United States, won the 1996 Catholic Press Award for gender studies. Professor Brock is a noted public speaker and has lectured and preached around the world including Japan, New Zealand, Australia, England, Canada and Germany. She is a member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ.)
Speaking on Monday will be Dr. J. Denny Weaver, Professor of Religion at Bluffton University. Dr. Weaver's research interests center on issues of violence and nonviolence in Christian theology. His most recent works include the co-edited "Teaching Peace: Nonviolence and the Liberal Arts," and "The Nonviolent Atonement." An active member of the Mennonite Church USA, Dr. Weaver has taught and given lectures throughout the United States, Canada, Kenya and the United Kingdom (Dr. Miroslav Volf of Yale University Divinity School was scheduled to speak on Monday, but withdrew from the program in mid-November, citing a schedule conflict.)
The luncheon speaker for Tuesday is Mr. Joe Blundo, columnist for the Columbus Dispatch. An active member of North Broadway United Methodist Church, Mr. Blundo's humor column touches on many aspects of contemporary culture.
