Youngstown manreports being attacked
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 49-year-old East Judson Avenue man who went to retrieve a package from his car around 1 a.m. Wednesday said he was struck in the back of the head by one of two men who approached and demanded his car keys, reports show.
One of the assailants wore a black ski mask.
The victim told police he used his cane to knock one of the men to the ground. He then fled into his house and the assailants ran away.
Man in car hit by bullet
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 20-year-old New York man riding in a car with a South Garland Avenue woman on the East Side was hit in the left shoulder when a bullet penetrated the windshield Tuesday morning.
The gunfire, at least two shots, was in the Shehy Street area.
The victim was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center for treatment.
Board appoints 2
NEW MIDDLETOWN -- The Springfield Local Board of Education has made two appointments.
The school board named Kristin Withers the school district's Occupational Safety Health Administration compliance officer. She is to be paid $3,000 for the supplemental assignment.
The board also named Diana Pastore a reading intervention program instructor at the elementary school. Her hourly rate was set at $12.
South Range band trip
NORTH LIMA -- The South Range High School marching band will perform at the Dixie Classic Festival in Virginia Beach in April.
The school board, at its regular meeting this week, approved the band's trip to Virginia for the event, which will be April 14 to 17.
The board also approved a senior class trip to King's Island on May 27.
Also, the board set the pay rate for substitute bus drivers at $10.50 an hour.
Church reports theft
WARREN -- St. Demetrios Hellenic Orthodox Church, 429 High St. N.E., reported to police Tuesday that someone had broken in and taken a snow blower.
A host of charges
WARREN -- Loud music at night led city police to file a host of charges Tuesday against a Fifth Street Southwest man.
Police report Ronald L. Hall, 41, was arrested at his residence and then taken to jail on charges of loud music, driving under suspension, open container, falsification, obstructing official business and resisting arrest.
Winter coat giveaway
WARREN -- The East Side Kiwanis and Monument of Faith Church will have a winter coat giveaway from 3-7 p.m. Friday at the church, 2165 Highland S.W.
The coats are for toddlers and youths up to age 16.

Man on road arrested
GIRARD -- City police arrested a man found lying in the snow near one of the city's major intersections after learning that he was wanted on an outstanding warrant in Pennsylvania.
According to police reports, an officer on patrol spotted Roger R. Jones lying next to a blue bicycle in the road at State and Broadway early Monday morning.
The man said he had been drinking at a nearby bar and had been asked to leave. Someone at the bar had offered him the bicycle for transportation, he said.
After police ran a records check, they found that he was wanted on a warrant from Lawrence County, Pa.
Jones was taken to Trumbull County Jail, where he is awaiting extradition.
Attempted auto theft
WARREN -- A city woman's quest to get behind the wheel -- twice -- has landed her in Trumbull County Jail.
Police said Markeda E. Dorsey, 32, of Ferndale Street Southwest, walked up to a vehicle that was warming up early Monday in the parking lot of McNeal's Bar on Mahoning Avenue.
She got in and tried to drive away, but employees saw her and pulled her out. Police charged her with attempted auto theft and took her to jail.
The day before, she had been arrested during a traffic stop at North Park Avenue and Washington Street, police reported. She had been charged with drug paraphernalia, no front plate, fictitious plates and driving under suspension.
