Sparkling holiday fashions need a little care
KNIGHT RIDDER NEWSPAPERS
The upcoming holidays may call for sparkling fashions. Don't be intimidated by sewing beaded or sequined fabrics, but do be prepared for a little special handling.
Since they can be expensive, consider using them in small amounts.
Here is some advice:
UA lightweight fabric with a sprinkling of sparkle is easier to cut and sew than a heavily encrusted one.
UChoose simple styles with minimal seaming. Try to avoid darts, buttonholes and details.
UFor cutting, use old but sharp scissors, since both sequins and beads can dull the blades. Lay the fabric in a single layer, using a with nap layout. Sequins usually run downward.
UFor facings at neck, armholes or cuff areas, substitute smooth lining fabric for the fashion fabric. To cover any scratchy seams, line the garment completely.
UTo prepare for sewing, remove the beads and sequins from seam allowances and hems. Beads can be broken off with small pliers, and sequins can be cut through the center with scissors. If they have been attached individually, they are easier to remove. Threads that are cut should be secured with Fray Check; also reattach any beads that have come loose.
UTo press sequined fabric, lay it sequin-side down, place plain paper over the fabric and press on low heat, without steam. To press beaded fabric, lay a towel over your ironing board and work with the fabric face down, using low heat.
USew with good quality thread, and a size 90/14 needle. (Take my advice and have spare needles on hand!) For hems, you may want to attach wide bias tape and stitch by hand.
