Rig overturns in Lisbon
LISBON -- A tractor-trailer overturned on state Route 30 west of here Tuesday, blocking the road in both directions for about 3 1/2 hours, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. No one was hurt in the single-vehicle accident. The OSHP said the truck was headed west about 1 p.m. when the driver lost control and struck an embankment on the right side. The driver, Vladislav Oleynik, 41, of Yonkers, N.Y., was charged with failure to control a motor vehicle, state police said.
Man shot in abdomen
YOUNGSTOWN -- John Fitzgerald, 54, of South Truesdale Avenue was shot in the abdomen around 4:30 p.m. Monday as he got out of his car at his East Side home, police said. Fitzgerald told police a man dressed all in black and wearing a black ski mask approached and shouted "Give it up! Give it up!" before firing. The gunman fled toward Rigby Street. Fitzgerald was taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center.
Teen faces charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- A Youngstown teen faces several charges after a stolen Ford Explorer crashed on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Using a description given by a witness, police said they tracked down and arrested Matthew A. Dubose, 19, of Catalina Avenue. Police said they found pills on Dubose that belong to the Explorer's owner, reports show. He told police he traded marijuana for the pills. Dubose was arrested on charges of receiving stolen property, no driver's license and failure to control.
No drugs found at JFK
WARREN -- City police used a drug dog to sniff around John F. Kennedy High School. The search for marijuana turned up no contraband, said June Drennen, principal. Police conduct regular but unannounced checks of schools, the department said. Drennen said parents who might wonder what was going on will receive a notice in a newsletter.
Fires damage 2 homes
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two house fires kept firefighters busy this week. A fire at 401 N. Osborne Ave. at 6:58 p.m. Monday started in the basement and spread to the kitchen, said fire Lt. Kevin Johnson. The cause remains under investigation. Damage was estimated at $35,000. While firefighters were at the Osborne fire on the West Side, a call came in at 7:27 p.m. Monday for a fire at 44 E. Woodbine Ave. on the North Side, Johnson said. Firefighters from the South Side were sent to Woodbine. Johnson said fire started in trash near the rear door of the Woodbine house and spread to the garage. Damage was estimated at $27,000.
Hurt man still critical
WARREN -- Police say a man struck by a vehicle in front of 1703 W. Market St. on Sunday morning remained in critical condition Tuesday in St. Elizabeth Health Center, Youngstown. Christopher Stewart, 36, of Oak Street S.W. was struck near Raiders Lounge by a vehicle driven by 29-year-old Bane Street S.W. woman who was not cited in the pedestrian accident.
Trumbull ends recount
WARREN -- A recount of presidential votes by the Trumbull County Board of Elections staff wrapped up one day early and resulted in one more vote for President Bush. The board had set aside two days for counting the 110,747 ballots but wrapped up its work Monday afternoon. A statewide check of November's presidential balloting is ongoing.
Cortland's Web page
CORTLAND -- The city is looking at changing its Web page. The city's page is maintained by Cboss Community Network. Mayor Curt Moll told city council he's in discussion with another company about the project and will discuss it at next month's meeting. Council has authorized $6,830 for the Niles-Trumbull Transit System, which is supported by member communities and federal transit dollars. Several communities, such as Cortland, Howland and Vienna, pay $1 per resident per year for riders in those areas to pay lower fares. The busing system is available to any Trumbull resident.
