MAHONING COUNTY The way this cookie crumbled, local man will head to prison
The judge and the inmate had some light banter about cookies and music.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Raymond Pankey is on his way to prison because of his love for cookies -- specifically Oreos.
Judge R. Scott Krichbaum of Mahoning County Common Pleas Court sentenced Pankey, 49, to a year a prison for assaulting a police officer. The hearing was Tuesday.
Pankey was serving an 180-day sentence in the county jail on a theft charge. He had been placed in the lockup in July.
Inmate became irate
On Aug. 7, Pankey became irate when he noticed the Oreo cookies on his dinner tray had been taken, Judge Krichbaum said.
Patrick R. Pochiro, an assistant county prosecutor, said the deputy tried to calm down Pankey, but he became more irate. The deputy threatened to put Pankey in the jail's isolation section if he didn't control himself.
It was at that time, Pochiro said, that Pankey punched the deputy in the face and split his lip.
During the sentencing, the judge asked Pankey, of Tod Lane, Youngstown, if his crime was worth it over some cookies.
When Pankey told him his Oreos had been taken, the judge entered into a dialogue with the prisoner, saying, "I'm a cookie-loving guy myself," adding he also was a fan of the brand.
Love for Oreos
The two men then discussed their mutual love for Oreos, with the judge saying there is a confection made with the cookies and funnel cakes at the Canfield Fair, which is "mouth-watering good."
The judge, however, reminded Pankey that "you can't go around assaulting police officers."
Pankey agreed and admitted his guilt.
The judge then asked Pankey if he was familiar with a song by rock singer John Cougar Mellencamp called "The Authority Song."
Pankey said yes and quoted a lyric from its chorus that says, "I fight authority; authority always wins."
The judge then asked Pankey if he was familiar with another song by a group called the Bobby Fuller Four.
Pankey seem perplexed, telling the judge he had not.
Judge Krichbaum said, "The name of the song was 'I Fought the Law' and the law won."
