WOMEN'S TOP 25 ROUNDUP \ Monday's games
No. 3 Duke 81, Ball St. 31
MUNCIE, Ind. -- Duke was its usual overpowering self. Mistie Williams had 13 points and 10 rebounds, Laura Kurz had 11 points and seven rebounds for the Blue Devils' ninth straight victory. Duke (11-1) held an opponent to less than 30 percent shooting for the eighth time this season. The Cardinals (3-6), who have lost six of seven, were led by Tina Bolte with eight points as they tied the school record for fewest points in a game. They also scored 31 against Ohio University on Jan. 13, 1993. Duke forced 25 turnovers, held a 54-40 rebounding edge and shut out the Cardinals' top scorer, Kate Endress. The Blue Devils disrupted Ball State's half-court offense, constantly forcing the Cardinals to race against the shot clock and the result was predictable. Duke closed the first half on a 35-1 run, holding the Cardinals scoreless for almost 15 minutes. The 45-7 halftime lead marked the second-lowest total the Blue Devils ever allowed in a half. Catawba scored six points on Jan. 10, 1979. It didn't take long for the Blue Devils to assert themselves. After Ball State's Becca Bajorek hit a 17-footer 4:39 into the game, Duke turned up the pressure and didn't allow another basket in the half. Duke extended its lead to as much as 56 points in the second half, as it tied an ACC record with 16 blocked shots.
No. 17 Maryland 83, Coppin St. 51
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Laura Harper had 19 points and nine rebounds, and keyed one of two 15-0 runs that led Maryland over Coppin State. Kalika France had 20 points for the Terrapins (8-1), off to their best start since the 1996-97 team began 9-1. Crystal Langhorne added 14 points for the Maryland, which shot 50.8 percent and never trailed. Sherrie Tucker scored 17 points to lead Coppin State (6-3), winless in 10 meetings since 1991 with Maryland -- all of them on the Terrapins' home court. Leisel Henry added 9 points and 10 rebounds. Coppin State kept it close in the opening minutes before Maryland went on its first big run to a 32-14 lead with 4:40 remaining in the first half. Langhorne scored eight points during the run. Maryland led 37-21 at the break, then put the game away with another 15-0 spurt to start the second half. Harper keyed that with scoring eight points, and her jumper with 15:40 remaining gave the Terrapins a 52-21 lead. The Eagles never got closer than 26 points thereafter.
No. 16 Vanderbilt 86, BYU 47
MALIBU, Calif. -- Dee Davis scored 21 points to lead Vanderbilt over BYU in the Hilton Woodland Hills Beach Classic. Cherish Stringfield added 16 points for the Commodores (8-1), who also got 15 from Carla Thomas and 14 from Ashley Earley. BYU (6-3) was led by Mallary Gillespie with 7 points.
