WRESTLING Bluejays take tourney title, Dierkes MVP



RICHMOND HEIGHTS -- Senior Nick Dierkes of Jackson-Milton High was named Most Valuable Wrestler, helping the Bluejays to the championship of the Richmond Heights Division III Tournament.
Jackson-Milton finished with 247.5 points, outdistancing team runner-up Brookfield, which had 170.
Other area teams in the meet were Ursuline, 16th place with 69 points, and South Range, tied for 18th with 62.
Dierkes won the 145-pound title, defeating Corey Braden of Norwalk St. Paul.
Three other Jackson-Milton wrestlers won weight class titles -- Jake Hambrick (119), Mike Wiseman (152) and Adam Keck (171).
Also, Adam Gettman (130) and John Rozum (160) were second, Joe Skaggs (125) was third, Matt Mascioli (112) was fourth, and Mark Gibbs (135) and Jeff Yaratch were sixth.
Brookfield had no individual champions, but Randy Hogue (152) and Anthony Policastro (171) were second, Dave Dillon (140) and Ross Tice (145) were third, Brad Harnett (130) and Mike Lake (189) were fourth, Josh Matthews (160) was fifth and Justin Miller (119) was sixth.
Ursuline's Bradley Parks was second at 215, and Sean Poole was third at 152.
For South Range, Levi Hively (119) was fourth and Nick Scheetz (103) was sixth.
Canfield
Canfield High placed four wrestlers on the podium over the weekend at the Hudson Holiday Tournament.
Fourth-place finishes went to senior Pat McCabe at 189 (4-2) and freshman Brad Benedict at 103 (3-2), with all three wins by pin. Junior Bryan Benedict was sixth with three wins at 135 and junior Justin Wolfe (3-2) was fifth at 145.
Sixteen schools participated in the two-day event.
