MAHONING COUNTY Green Team gets ready

Thousands of pounds of wrapping paper and trees were collected last year.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Recycling Division of Mahoning County (The Green Team) is once again helping residents make this a green Christmas.
Many locations in the county will accept discarded gift wrap and greeting cards for recycling. Others will take Christmas trees, offering an alternative to leaving them at the curb to be picked up by refuse haulers.
"Through their participation in last year's holiday recycling programs, Mahoning County residents made a significant contribution to the environment," said Harold Moore, interim director of The Green Team.
"More than 1,700 pounds of wrapping paper and cards, and 34,000 pounds of cut trees were diverted from local landfills and used instead for beneficial purposes," said Moore. "We're hoping for even stronger participation this year."
Gift wrap, cards accepted
Recycling drop-off sites in the county will accept discarded gift wrap and greeting cards at specially designated bins. Ribbons, bows and foil gift wrap are not accepted.
Christmas trees may be taken to selected locations in the county. The trees will be chipped into mulch for use in each community's landscaping program. Only live trees will be accepted, and all decorations must be removed.
