Phantoms snaplosing streak
BOARDMAN -- The Youngstown Phantoms snapped a season-long four-game losing streak with a 5-0 win over the Soo Kewadin Indians at The Ice Zone in a North American Hockey League game Sunday.
Dale Michonski and Bob Collar each scored twice and goaltender Jerry Kuhn made 32 saves for his second shutout of the season.
After a scoreless first period, the Phantoms (17-10-2) exploded for four goals, handing Soo goaltender Jason Kearney his first loss as an Indian since being acquired last month.
Bob Collar scored two goals that period, the first at 1:05 off a feed from Shane Lennox to open the scoring.
Jeremy Smith pushed the lead to 2-0 after Anthony Canzoneri moved the puck from behind the goal to the left side.
His shot was deflected in traffic, and Smith trailed in the low-center slot and beat Kearney glove side.
Later in the period, Marc Menzione broke up a blue-line pass in the Youngstown zone. Menzione pushed the puck out of the zone, and it redirected off an Indian's skate to a breaking Dale Michonski. Michonski skated in uncontested, waited until Kearney committed, and wrapped the puck past the goalie's left skate for a 3-0 lead at the 13:33 mark. Then, just 49 seconds later, the Phantoms capitalized again. After Mike Maltese won a faceoff in the Soo zone, he pushed it ahead with one hand on his stick, split two defenders, and backhanded the puck to a streaking Collar, who easily beat Kearney, and gave the Phantoms a commanding 4-0 lead.
In the third, Michonski redirected a Jeremy Smith slapshot, right in front of Kearney, for his second goal of the night, at the 15:39 mark to finish the scoring.
Anthony Ciraulo had two assists, as the Phantoms had four players register two points in the win. Kuhn improved his record to 11-7-1, snapping a personal three-game losing streak.
The Phantoms play host to the Toledo Ice Diggers on Wednesday at 7 p.m. at The Ice Zone.
