Field goal gives Carroll College the NAIA title
Marcus Miller kicked the game-winning points with 10 seconds to go.
SAVANNAH, Tenn. (AP) -- Marcus Miller kicked a 32-yard field goal with 10 seconds remaining to give Carroll a 15-13 victory over St. Francis (Indiana) and its third straight NAIA championship on Saturday.
Chris Bramell gave St. Francis (13-1) a 13-12 lead with a 1-yard touchdown plunge with 1:13 to go to complete a 17-play, 89-yard drive, but it was enough time for Tyler Emmert to drive Carroll (12-2) down the field without a timeout.
Emmert went 3-for-4 for 49 yards and scrambled for 11 more on the final drive to put Miller in position to win the game, but not before a heads up play by Zach Bumgarner to spike the ball on a first field goal attempt after a bad snap with 20 seconds remaining.
Miller lined up for the field goal again, and the kick was perfect.
St. Francis hadn't moved the ball effectively until the drive that put them up 13-12 after Bramell converted a fourth-and-10 on the Carroll 42 by rolling out of the pocket and scrambling 13 yards. Bramell scored five plays later.
Wind played havoc
The game matched up the top players in the NAIA the past two seasons, but both teams missed multiple opportunities until the fourth quarter as a brisk wind caused punts as short as 15 yards and passes that sailed well past intended receivers.
Emmert, who won the player of the year award in 2003, went 24-for-35 for 214 yards, while St. Francis used Cory Jacquay, the 2004 winner, as a decoy most of the game.
He finished with four carries for 11 yards and four receptions for 38 yards.
Emmert's numbers weren't great, but he led the Fighting Saints on two fourth-quarter touchdown drives.
The Fighting Saints took a 12-7 lead when Ryan Grosulak scored on fourth-and-1 from the 5 with 6:56 remaining after he fumbled at the goal line in the first half and cost Carroll a touchdown.
Bramell, who finished 16-of-26 for 151 yards, missed his targets most of the game, including underthrowing a sure touchdown pass on the first drive of the second half and throwing another pass that was picked off in the third quarter.
St. Francis scored on Carroll's opening possession when Chris Van Horn blocked Zach Thiry's punt and Zac Rainey returned it 48 yards for a touchdown in the first quarter.
Emmert found Kevin McCutcheon for a 13-yard touchdown pass in the closing minutes of the half.
The Cougars blocked the extra point, and St. Francis led at halftime 7-6 despite gaining just 82 yards.
