CITY ROUNDUP Last-second layup gets Fitch victory
Nigel Taylor scored the game-winner and kept the Falcons unbeaten.
AUSTINTOWN -- Nigel Taylor's layup with 4.2 seconds remaining in overtime provided the game-winning points for Austintown Fitch High, which remained unbeaten with a 62-61 victory over Massillon Jackson Friday night.
The Falcons (6-0, 2-0 Federal League) trailed 38-20 at halftime, but outscored the Polar Bears (3-2, 0-2) 16-6 in the third quarter and 21-13 in the fourth period to force overtime.
James Wallace, who led all scorers with 27 points, hit a 3-pointer to put Fitch ahead 60-59, before Jackson regained the lead, setting up Taylor's game-winning basket.
Damian Eargle added 11 points for Fitch.
Jackson, which has lost both of its league games in overtime, was led by Mark Young with 16 points and Mike Nichols with 14.
Girard 93, Mooney 77
GIRARD -- Nick Cretella scored 30 points and Lewis Starr added 23 for Girard, which won its first game of the season in a high-scoring contest.
Starr also had 11 rebounds for the Indians (1-3), while Eric Stevens added 11 points and three steals. Sean Mostov had 10 points and Rob Ginocchi finished with five assists.
Jaron Howell poured in 32 points for Mooney (0-3). L.J. Sutton added 13 and Dom Daltorio scored 10.
Girard trailed 42-36 at halftime, but outscored the Cardinals 29-14 in the third quarter to take the lead.
Ursuline 54, Newton Falls 44
YOUNGSTOWN -- Terry Vidale had team-highs of 13 points and six rebounds to lead Ursuline.
Derrick Stewart added 12 points and Nick McCartney scored 10 for the Irish (3-1), who led by only three points, 31-28, at the end of the third quarter.
East Liverpool 81, Chaney 68
YOUNGSTOWN -- Brian Kreefer had 32 points and 11 rebounds to lead East Liverpool in a game that was separated by one point entering the fourth period.
Daniel Sallis scored 15 points for the Potters (5-1), who led only 56-55 after three quarters. Andrew Bobalik added 14 points for East Liverpool.
Chaney (0-5) was led by Evan Bush, with 16 points, Jeremy Tomlin with 15 and Kory Jackson with 10. Glen Brown had nine rebounds and Antonio Fitzgerald finished with 12 assists.
