BASEBALL ROUNDUP \ News and notes
Mariners: Adrian Beltre signed a $64 million, five-year contract, boosting one of the weakest lineups. Beltre passed a physical, the team's final step before securing the slugging third baseman. Beltre, 25, led the majors last season with 48 homers for the Los Angeles Dodgers. He hit .334 with 121 RBIs, and finished second to Barry Bonds in the NL MVP voting.
Red Sox: Edgar Renteria passed a physical and signed a four-year contract on Friday, bringing the All-Star shortstop to the World Series champions one day after they officially lost ace pitcher Pedro Martinez. Renteria's agreement includes a team option for 2009, when he will be 34.
Indians: Right-hander Denny Stark, left-hander Chad Zerbe and infielders Mike Kinkade and Jose Morban were signed to minor league contracts and invited to major league spring training camp. Stark, 30, spent most of the 2004 season at Triple-A Colorado Springs and was 8-2 with a 3.50 ERA in 14 games. Zerbe, 32, spent last season at Triple-A Fresno, going 6-6 with a 4.29 ERA in 33 games. Kinkade, 31, played in Japan with the Hanshin Tigers where he was limited to 26 games and hit .233 (20-for-86) with three home runs and seven RBIs. He was slowed by concussion and broken left hand after being hit by 12 pitches in 26 games. Morban, 25, split 2004 between Double-A Bowie and Single-A Frederick. The Indians have invited 11 other minor leaguers to camp, including first baseman/catcher Ryan Garko, one of the organization's minor league players of the year. Garko, 23, batted a combined .333 with 22 home runs and 100 RBIs at Double-A Akron and Triple-A Buffalo.
White Sox: Outfielder Timo Perez agreed to a $1 million, one-year deal, avoiding arbitration. Perez hit .246 with five homers and 40 RBIs last season, his first with the White Sox after being acquired from the New York Mets on March 27. The left-hander hit .397 with runners in scoring position. He played 49 games in right field, 25 in center and 12 in left, and made 69 starts. Perez has a career average of .269 with 23 homers and 154 RBIs in five seasons with the New York Mets and White Sox. He also spent four seasons in Japan with the Hiroshima Carp. The White Sox also claimed right-hander Bobby Jenks off waivers from Anaheim and designated righty Eduardo Villacis for assignment.
Rangers: Infielder Greg Colbrunn agreed to a minor league contract on Friday and was invited to spring training. Injuries limited Colbrunn to 20 games with the Arizona Diamondbacks last season. He has played in 992 career games, hitting .289 with 98 home runs and 422 RBI in a 13-year career with Montreal, Florida, Minnesota, Atlanta, Colorado, Arizona and Seattle. He underwent right wrist surgery on June 30. He was activated in September but did not play.
Rockies: Infielder Alfredo Amezaga was claimed off waivers from the Anaheim Angels. Amezaga, a switch-hitter, hit .161 with two home runs and 11 RBIs in 73 games for Anaheim last season. He played shortstop, second base and third base. He went 0-for-2 in two playoff games against the Boston Red Sox.
Marlins: Free agent reliever Antonio Alfonseca signed a one-year contract to rejoin his former team. Alfonseca will receive the league minimum $300,000 and can earn an additional $1.7 million in incentives, said his agent, Juan Iglesias. The deal includes an option for a second year for Alfonseca if he pitches in 65 games next season. Alfonseca underwent season-ending back surgery in 2001, but was healthy in 2004. The Marlins also signed left-hander Chad Bentz, catcher Mike DeFelice and infielder Wilson Delgado to minor league deals and invited them to spring training.
