YSU BASKETBALL Penguins hope to rebound vs. WSU
Derrick Harris had a career game in YSU's four-overtime loss to Siena.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State men's basketball team begins its fourth Horizon League season on Saturday at Wright State. Tipoff at the Nutter Center is set for 7 p.m.
The game will be broadcast on WNIO-AM (1390).
The Penguins (2-5 overall) are coming off a 79-78 four-overtime loss to Siena on Tuesday night. Derrick Harris had a career highs with 22 rebounds and eight points in 57 minutes. Senior forward Khari McQueen was in the lineup for the first time this season after missing six games with a broken foot. He played a career-high 36 minutes, scoring six points and tying his career best with eight rebounds.
McQueen has played in two of the four longest games in school history. Besides Tuesday night's marathon, McQueen -- as a freshman -- played in YSU's three-overtime contest at Western Illinois on Jan. 25, 2001. Of the 13 games in school history that were double-overtime or more, McQueen was on the team for four of them.
Wright State (4-5) is coming off a 54-42 loss at Southern Illinois. The Raiders, who started league play last season by winning seven of eight games, have lost three straight and four of their past five, after starting the season 3-1.
Poor shooting
Against Southern Illinois, Wright State shot 34.1 percent. The 42 points was the worst outing by the Raiders since they scored 35 against Northern Iowa on Dec. 4, 1999.
DaShaun Wood leads the Raiders with 17.1 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Zakee Boyd is averaging 12.8 per game and Drew Burleson is averaging 10.9.
The Penguins trail the all-time series 22-6 and have won in Dayton one time in their 14 visits, 62-56 on Dec. 17, 1994.
Wright State won both meetings last season. At Beeghly Center on Dec. 18, Seth Doliboa had 24 points and Vernard Hollins scored 19 to offset a 22-point night by Doug Underwood in a 69-59 Raider win. In the second contest at the Nutter Center on Feb. 19, McQueen had a career-high 13 points, but Hollins tossed in a game-high 24 points and Wood scored 19 in the 81-61 win.
The Penguins and Illinois-Chicago are the only two Horizon League teams who will play two conference contests in December. UIC lost 75-67 on Dec. 4 at home to UW-Milwaukee and plays at Detroit on Dec. 30. YSU plays host to Loyola on Tuesday night. All other league games are scheduled to be played in January and February.
