Art museum gets $5M grant
CLEVELAND (AP) -- The Cleveland Museum of Art has received a $5 million grant from the Cleveland-based Gund Foundation toward its planned $225 million expansion and renovation, the museum announced Tuesday.
The grant ties a $5 million state of Ohio grant as the biggest to date in the museum's fund-raising drive. The drive remains in the early "silent" period and no totals have been released, spokeswoman Donna Brock said.
"This grant not only indicates a tremendous vote of confidence from the trustees of the Gund Foundation, but it also marks another significant investment in this city," said Katharine Lee Reid, museum director.
The museum expects to break ground for the project next year, Brock said. It will add gallery space and renovate its neoclassical facade of white Georgian marble overlooking a park.
The foundation was created in 1952 by Cleveland Trust banker George Gund.
