KENT -- Freshman jumpers Carly Youlton, Yandeh Joh and Kyle Dalton all turned in impressive performances in their first collegiate meet as the Youngstown State track and field team kicked off its season at Kent State's Golden Flash Gala.
Youlton placed fourth in the triple jump with a mark of 36 feet, 8 1/2 inches, and added a ninth-place spot of 17-4 3/4 in the long jump.
Joh placed fifth in the long jump with a leap of 17-9 1/2 while Dalton placed fourth in the high jump with a mark of 6-4.
Four YSU women placed in the top 10 in the mile as Marielle Glanz was third in 5:27.72, Lindsay Wojciak was fifth in 5:29.07, Gina Mavrikis was sixth in 5:30.49 and Kim Jendre placed 10th in 5:46.08.
Senior hurdler Aaliyah Gillespie also started well with a fourth-place time of 8.90 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles.
Freshman sprinter Emily Wollet placed fifth in the 400 in 59.26 while Danielle Bolt added a sixth-place time of 7.67 in the 60-meter dash and an eighth-place time of 25.66 in the 200. Jeanna Cunningham placed 10th in the 200 with a 25.75.
In the throws, Katy Williams placed 11th in the weight throw with a mark of 50- 3/4 while Bethany Anderson placed 13th in the shot put (41-11 1/2) and 14th in the weight throw (49-6 1/2).
On the men's side, Scott Weiser placed sixth in the 400 with a time of 49.92 and added a 15th-place time of 22.80 in the 200. Scott Striener placed seventh in the 200 in 22.54 and R.D. Goodright placed 10th in the mile with a time of 4:29.91.
Jeremy Riehm placed 13th in the 5,000 with a time of 15:36.56 while Ryan Petrick was 15th with a time of 15:46.81. Kevin Steele placed 14th in the shot put with a mark of 45-9 3/4 and Donnie Hull posted a 15th-place mark of 44-4 1/4.

Rayen beats Timken
YOUNGSTOWN -- Taniesha Holland scored 29 points to lead The Rayen School past Canton Timken, 56-40, in a girls basketball game Saturday.
McCabe 5-0
CANFIELD -- Canfield High senior Pat McCabe went 5-0 at the Brad Bauer Memorial Tournament Saturday in Ravenna.
McCabe had four wins by pin, and the fifth by a 15 - 0 technical fall.
McCabe, wrestling at 171 and 189 pounds, is 9-1 this season.
Chambers namedto All-American team
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Thiel College junior wide receiver Brandon Chambers (Farrell) was named to the Don Hansen's Weekly Football Gazette All-American Team.
Chambers was selected to the third team offense.
Chambers was the leading receiver in the Presidents' Athletic Conference and was 17th in Division III in receiving yards per game (100.6).
He set school season marks in receptions (71), receiving touchdowns (12) and scoring (78) while finishing second in receiving yards (1006).
Jr. Phantomswin three
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown Jr. Phantoms bantam travel hockey team won three games last weekend to improve their season record to 6-0-0.
On Friday the Phantoms beat Shaker Heights 8-0. Scoring for Youngstown were Steve Cornich, Ryan Rinko and John Vanasdale, each with two goals. Also scoring goals were Jay Young and Don Super. Jonathan Welsh had the shutout in goal.
Saturday the Phantoms defeated Brooklyn 7-3. Jay Young and Ryan Rinko each had a hat trick and Hunter Thompson had one goal. Jared Pack got the win in goal, stopping 14 shots.
On Sunday Youngstown beat Winterhurst 6-3. Scoring for the Phantoms were Ryan Taylor with two goals, Brendan Sinchak, John Vanasdale, Devrin Olgun, and Ryan Rinko each scored one. Jonathan Welsh had 27 saves in goal.
Phantoms lose 2
CLEVELAND -- The Cleveland Barons got two goals each from John Goebel and Nick Kosinski as they defeated the Youngstown Phantoms, 5-1, in a North American Hockey League game Sunday.
Youngstown's only goal was scored by Aaron Rhyner.
On Saturday, Cleveland bounced back from a 3-0 deficit and defeated Youngstown, 5-3.

Meyer fills spots
GAINESVILLE, Fla. -- Florida coach Urban Meyer nearly filled out his coaching staff Monday, keeping two assistants from Ron Zook's staff and bringing four with him from Utah.
Meyer also named Indiana offensive coordinator Steve Addazio the tight ends coach and hired Notre Dame defensive line coach Greg Mattison.
Gators defensive coordinator Charlie Strong will work with Mattison on the defensive side of the ball.
Meyer also said running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Mike Locksley will remain at Florida in the same capacity.
Utah assistants Billy Gonzales, John Hevesy, Dan Mullen and Chuck Heater will move with Meyer.
