YOUNGSTOWN STATE Penquins looking to rebound before conference play begins

There's a doubleheader tonight at Beeghly Center, starting at 5:15 p.m.
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Youngstown State basketball teams will look to bounce back from double-digit losses tonight at Beeghly Center.
The doubleheader begins at 5:15 p.m. when the YSU women's team plays host to Buffalo. Then the Penguins' men's team will take the court at approximately 7:35 p.m. against Siena.
For the YSU men, this will be the last non-conference game before the Horizon League season begins. The Penguins travel to Wright State on Saturday and play host to Loyola on Dec. 21.
The Penguins (2-4) are coming off an 81-59 loss to Bowling Green. Against the Falcons, Quin Humphrey scored in double figures for the sixth straight game, finishing with 16 points, and Zach Silverman had 12.
Siena (1-7) picked up its first win of the season on Saturday, beating Iona 59-56. Antoine Jordan and Michael Haddix each scored 11 in the win. Jordan hauled down 11 rebounds and Haddix had eight.
This season, Haddix leads the Saints with a 16.3 points per game average. Haddix has scored in double figures every contest this season, posting a season-high 26 points in the season opener against Oregon State.
Robic still upbeat
Despite losing four straight games, YSU coach John Robic said he is pleased with the team's mentality.
"Sunday we watched the [Bowling Green] film and saw the mistakes that we made and there were plenty of them," Robic said. "The correctable ones we are working on and are trying to go into [tonight's] game with a different frame of mind.
"I stopped practice at one point in time today and said 'This isn't the team I see on the court when the game starts.' We were sharing the ball and doing the right things and making the extra passes. We just need anybody to step up and make shots."
Robic said turnovers and transition baskets have led to YSU's losing streak.
"That's where the game sort of got out of hand from us was points off turnovers," he said. "Really, the turnovers that we created were unforced. There were quite a few of them. If I were playing us, I would pressure us also.
"Siena presses full court, but I think in the half court they will pressure us as well. Bowling Green took us out of the game. That is something we have to keep addressing."
Fabianova in zone
The YSU women's team is coming off an 87-62 loss to Eastern Michigan on Saturday.
Barb Fabianova scored 20 points in the first half to stake the Penguins to an early lead, but the unbeaten Eagles dominated the second half.
"Barb is one who wants the ball in her hands. She wants to score," said YSU coach Tisha Hill. "She's really picking it up on the defensive end as far as getting some key rebounds. She is certainly someone who I want to have the ball in her hands as much as possible. All the players are really feeding off that."
Buffalo is 1-6 after losing to Niagara, 68-65 in overtime, on Saturday.
The Bulls are led by freshman forward Heather Turner, who is averaging 11 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. She had 13 points and 16 rebounds against Niagara and her 63.3 percent shooting percentage leads the Mid-American Conference.
Junior guard Brooke Meunier scored a career-high 25 points in Saturday's game. She is averaging 10.1 points per game this season.
"Buffalo is a very scrappy team that is going to come in here," Hill said. "They are a good MAC team as far as their hustle and their work ethic. They are hungry for a win. They beat us last year and I'm sure they will have confidence coming in here thinking that something good might happen.
Hill said the intensity the Penguins have shown in practice is something they need to take into games.
"We've really been working hard. Just the intensity that we brought [Monday] at practice will hopefully give us something to really build on for the game [today] and we can piece together that entire 40-minute game that we need."
Youngstown State is off until Dec. 22, when it will play host to Cleveland State at 7 p.m. in the Horizon League opener.
