Ex-commissioner's body found under home
PENSACOLA, Fla. (AP) -- The body of a former county commissioner who vanished a day before he was to be sentenced on corruption charges was found beneath the home of a man who once worked for him.
The remains of Escambia County Commissioner Willie Junior were discovered Thursday evening in a crawl space. Authorities identified the body Friday using dental records and fingerprints.
An autopsy revealed no obvious signs of foul play. Officials were awaiting results of toxicology tests before determining a cause of death.
Along with the body, investigators found an empty pill bottle without a label, three empty beer bottles and one that was unopened, Police Chief John Mathis said.
"We're leaving all doors and avenues open," Mathis said.
Junior, 62, was to be sentenced on bribery, extortion and theft charges. Among other allegations, he was convicted of accepting bribes to vote for the purchase of a defunct soccer complex for $3.9 million.
Authorities were uncertain how long the body had been under the home of Ben Dudley, a former employee at Junior's funeral home.
Dudley told police he did not know about the body until a neighbor reported a foul odor.
