ERIE, Pa. -- Desiree Sterling scored 12 points and Erica Tallo recorded her 1,000th career point, to lead the Westminster College women's basketball team over Fredonia State 47-36 in the opening round of the Penn State-Behrend Tournament.
Mary Jane Eaton added eight points and 12 rebounds for the Titans (6-2), who won their third straight game. Tallo had nine points, giving her 1,005 for her career, and Alyson Gasper had five assists.
Fredonia State (5-3) was led by Jill Ratchuk with nine points.
Thiel 66, Ursuline 49
GREENVILLE, Pa. -- Kristen Benjamin scored 24 points and Nicole Valentino added 16 as the Tomcats won their home opener.
Fontella Jones had 10 rebounds for Thiel (3-7) and Benjamin had eight. Heather Abate and Sarah McCoy added six and five assists, respectively.
Julie Garner paced Ursuline (1-9) with 15 points and 11 rebounds, while Lisa Piechowski had 11 points.
Men
GLENVILLE, W. Va. -- Glenn Reepmeyer scored 21 points, grabbed nine rebounds, blocked five shots and had three steals -- all team-highs -- and handed out two assists in Slippery Rock's 80-67 loss to Mars Hill (N.C.) in the opening round of the Theras-Pro Tournament at Glenville State College.
The Rock battled back from a 17-point halftime and 21-point hole early in the second half to close to within one point with six minutes remaining, but could not complete the comeback and lost for the fifth time in as many games this winter.
Mars Hill evened its record at 5-5.
The Rock meet Glenville State in the consolation game at 6 p.m. today.
Bill Johnson added 15 points and three assists, and Ben Daniels had 10 points and five rebounds for SRU, which led throughout the first 7 1/2 minutes before Mars Hill took the lead en route to a 43-26 halftime advantage.
The Rock's deficit grew to 21 points, 49-28, 1 1/2 minutes into the final half before SRU came roaring back.
