Academy-Award winning singer to get YSU honor
YOUNGSTOWN -- Academy Award-winningsinger Maureen McGovern, a Boardman native,willdo double-duty during a visit to the Mahoning Valley in December.
McGovern will receive an honorary doctor of music degree from YSU at fall commencement at 2 p.m. on Dec. 12 in Beeghly Center.
The next night she will perform an 8 p.m. concert at Stambaugh Auditorium to benefit YSU's Dana School of Music and the Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic in Youngstown.
McGovern is currently preparing to play the role of Marmee in the play, "Little Women, The Musical."

African celebration set atDeBartolo Stadium Club
YOUNGSTOWN -- The fifth annual Jabali African Cultural Celebration will be 6:30 p.m. Friday in the DeBartolo Stadium Club on the Youngstown State University campus.
The celebration, sponsored by YSU's Africana Studies Program, features a dinner of authentic African cuisine and musical entertainment by the Youngstown Connection and the African Students Union.
Jane Ogunro, professor of French at Thiel College in Greenville, Pa., and a native of Ghana, West Africa, will give a keynote address titled "The Universal Significance of Kente Art Symbolism in Ghanian Culture."

YSU names alumni official
YOUNGSTOWN -- Heather Belgin of Boardman is the new coordinator in the Office of Alumni Relations at Youngstown State University.
In the new post, Belgin is responsible for planning events for alumni in various areas throughout the nation.
"I will maintain communication with alumni to encourage support and involvement with the university and handle various associated public relations tasks," said Belgin, a 1994 graduate of Girard High School who earned a bachelor's degree in communications from Clarion University in 1998.
Before coming to YSU, Belgin was director of the Youngstown Area Community Cup at the Youngstown YMCA. She also was associate director of Leadership Mahoning Valley and an admissions counselor at Thiel College in Greenville, Pa.
Awards and honors
YOUNGSTOWN -- Mary Mislay Hake, administrative assistant, arts and sciences at Youngstown State University, and Sue Urmson, secretary, fine and performing arts, have attained the Certified Administrative Professional designation, which is awarded by the International Association of Administrative Professionals.
Johanna Krontiris-Litowitz, a YSU professor of biological sciences, received a Teaching Career Enhancement Award from the American Physiological Society for 2004-05. The award supports the development of classroom manipulatives intended to enhance conceptual learning in the physiology classroom.
Sue Scavelli, research associate for the university's human services development, is serving as project manager, conducting a series of interviews and focus groups to evaluate the impact of a Youngstown Reads/AmeriCorps Project conducted by The Neil Kennedy Recovery Clinic.
Several YSU personnel also were lauded for having papers published.
Diane Barnes, assistant professor of history, published "Fraternity and Masculine Identity: The Search for Respectability Among White and Black Artisans in Petersburg, Virginia, in Southern Manhood: Perspectives on Masculinity in the Old South."
Robert I. Bolla, dean of arts and sciences, co-published "Pinewood Nematode: Pathological or Political in Nematology Monographs and Perspectives."
Joseph Mistovich, chairman and professor, Department of Health Professions, published "Prehospital Pathophysiology: Penetrating Chest Trauma" in the August 2004 issue of Emergency Medical Services.
Allen Hunter, professor of chemistry, co-published "The Molecular and Electronic Structure of N,N'-Ethylenebis (acetylacetonlylideiminato) Oxovanadium (IV) and the Electronic Structure of its Thio Analogue" in the Journal of Electron Spectroscopy and Related Phenomena.
