Campbell held off Chaney's second-half rally to pull out the 67-59 win.
YOUNGSTOWN - What began as a blowout, ended up a close call.
The Campbell Memorial High School boys basketball team stormed out to a 26-7 halftime lead, then weathered Chaney's third-quarter comeback to pull out a 67-59 road victory Friday night.
"We executed just enough -- I mean just enough -- to get the W," said Campbell coach Brian Danilov. "In the second half, we just stopped doing all the things we did right in the first half. We knew Chaney wouldn't quit and they got on a roll there and almost got us."
Chaney (0-3) actually had more field goals than the Red Devils (27-22), but struggled at the free throw line, converting just 7-of-17 shots. Campbell drilled 20-of-37 from the free throw line, which proved to be the difference.
Offensive output
The combination of Campbell's solid shooting and Chaney's inability to score contributed to the Red Devils' strong start. Campbell outscored Chaney 13-2 in the first quarter, sparked by the play of Terrance Phillips. The guard scored 11 points in the first half, four more than Chaney had before intermission.
Chaney hit just 3-of-20 field goals and 1-of-6 free throws in the first half. The Cowboys went into the locker room down 26-7, and staring an opportunity in the face.
"I told them they had two choices," said Chaney coach Dan D'Alesto. "They could accept the challenge or go out and show that we're not a good basketball team. I knew they would make the right choice."
Trey Soares started the third quarter with a 3-pointer to give Campbell its biggest lead of the game at 29-9.
Storming back
That's when Chaney started its comeback.
Led by Dominique Peak, the Cowboys chipped away at the deficit. Their pressure defense was the key, as Chaney disrupted the Red Devils' offense and took advantage of several turnovers. The Red Devils' lead was down to 40-26 after three quarters.
But every time the Cowboys got within striking distance, Campbell did just enough to keep them at bay. With 4:59 remaining, the Red Devils were in the double bonus and shooting two shots after every Chaney foul. While they didn't shoot as well as in the first half, every point was critical.
Chaney continued to battle back and got within six points on an Evan Bush 3-pointer with 36 seconds left. But the deficit was too large and Campbell made enough free throws down the stretch to survive.
"In the first half, we played to win but in the second we played not to lose," Danilov said. "We stopped being aggressive and stopped executing. Luckily, we made a few free throws and the big start we had early in the game was just enough to help us win."
Campbell (3-2) was led by Phillips' 25 points. Teyon Harris added 17, while Jermaine Richardson had 10.
Chaney was sparked by the return of Peak, who sat out the Cowboys' first three games. He scored a team-high 20 points, including 15 in the second half. Kory Jackson added 12 points.
"Our defense really got after it in the third quarter and the kids didn't quit," D'Alesto said. "It was just too big of a hole against a team like Campbell. But we almost pulled it off."
