AREA BASKETBALL ROUNDUP Westminster women win



Desiree Sterling led the Titans to the Behrend Invitational championship.
ERIE, Pa. -- Westminster College's women's basketball team rolled to its fourth consecutive win as the Titans overcame an eight-point halftime deficit to post a 53-44 victory over Penn State-Behrend in the championship game of the Behrend Invitational.
Sophomore guard Desiree Sterling (Newton Falls) led Westminster (7-2) with a game-high 18 points and was named tournament MVP. Erica Tallo added 14 points and Mary Jane Eaton has 12 rebounds.
Amber Krumpe led Behrend (4-4) with 14 points.
Denison 56, Hiram 47
GRANVILLE -- Junior Jessica Harris posted 14 points and 10 rebounds for Hiram (3-4, 0-2 North Coast Athletic Conference). Sophomore Cassie Bedard added nine points and seven rebounds.
Senior Valerie Goudy (South Range) scored eight points and hit two 3-pointers and Jamie Hanson had five assists.
Capital 86, Mount Union 64
BEXLEY -- Kyla Hogan led Mount Union (2-5, 0-3 Ohio Athletic Conference) with a career-high 27 points. Lauren Friedrich added 12 points, five rebounds, and four steals for Mount Union.
Capital (8-0, 3-0) was paced by Sara Heitkamp with 23 points and seven assists. Jennifer Lilly added 16 points and 10 rebounds for the Crusaders.
Men
BEXLEY -- Kyle Karpinski scored a career-high 27 points and added eight rebounds for Mount Union, but the Purple Raiders lost, 70-62, at Capital.
Chris Blakely added 12 points and a game-high 13 rebounds for Mount Union (3-4, 1-2 OAC), while Brad Gerard had 12 points.
Capital was paced by Jake Beck's 18 points, while David Johnson added 15 points and four assists.
Lake Erie 60, Grove City 42
PAINESVILLE -- Grove City (4-3) scored just 11 second-half points in a non-conference game. The Wolverines have lost three straight.
The Wolverines led 31-30 at the half but shot just 5 for 20 (25 percent) in the second half after making 13 of 19 shots (68 percent) in the first half. Grove City also committed 25 turnovers, which led to 27 Lake Erie points.
Shawn Carr (Mohawk) led Grove City with nine points. Robert Williams led Lake Erie with 11 points.
Westminster 121,Elizabethtown 120, OT
ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. -- Chris Hatch (South Range) scored a career-high 29 points to lead Westminster to its sixth consecutive win.
Other Titans (7-1) to reach double figures in scoring were Mark DeMonaco (New Castle) with 21 points, Craig Hannon (Union) with 19 points off the bench (including a team-high five three-pointers), Dom Joseph and Pat O'Connor each with 13, and Brian Fadden (Mohawk) with 10. O'Connor added a team-high eight rebounds, while Fadden dished out five assists and DeMonaco had four steals.
Kyle Conrad paced Elizabethtown (4-4) with 26 points.
