YSU BASKETBALL Penguins hope to find winning ways
The team has lost three straight games and faces Bowling Green Saturday.
The Youngstown State men's basketball team closed out final exams this week and now turns its attention to Saturday, when the Penguins host Bowling Green.
Youngstown State (2-3) will be looking to snap a three-game losing streak as the Falcons visit Beeghly Center for the first time since January 1992. Tipoff is at 2 p.m.
YSU was last on the court at the SMS Price Cutter Classic in Springfield, Mo., last Saturday. The Penguins lost the consolation game to Southeastern Louisiana 77-55.
Bowling Green (4-1) has won four straight games after losing its season opener at DePaul, including victories over Horizon League members Detroit and Illinois-Chicago. The Falcons also beat Bluffton 87-60 Wednesday night.
The Falcons have not allowed 70 points in a game this season and are holding opponents to 38.4 percent shooting. No opponent has shot better than 45 percent against the Falcons.
Reimold is leader
Against Bluffton, John Reimold, a Kennedy Catholic High graduate, scored 18 points, and Josh Almanson added 16. Reimold has scored in double figures in every game this season and has 65 points in his last three outings.
Last year, Youngstown State lost 76-64 during an ESPN Bracket Buster game at Bowling Green on Feb. 21. Reimold scored 26 points for the Falcons. Leading the way for YSU was Khari McQueen with 11 points.
The Penguins are putting a four-game home winning streak on the line against teams from the Mid-American Conference. The streak began Nov. 28, 2000, with a 64-52 win over Western Michigan. On Dec. 15, 2001, the Penguins beat Kent State 75-70, and then beat Toledo 69-61 and Buffalo 63-48 during the 2002-03 season.
Against Southeastern Louisiana, Brian Radakovich scored 16 points and Quin Humphrey added 15. At halftime, YSU trailed 28-22, but the Lions shot 63.3 percent (19-of-30) in the second half to maintain control.
Bowling Green leads the all-time series with YSU 8-2. The Falcons have won the last seven meetings. YSU's last win over Bowling Green was on Jan. 21, 1943, 56-53, in Youngstown.
Saturday's game will be followed by the Youngstown State women's team facing Eastern Michigan at 4:30 p.m.
