NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- A 22-year-old woman driving her SUV was shot in the back by a back-seat passenger who accidentally discharged his gun, police said. Danielle C. Mastropietro of Johnson Road, New Castle, was driving on U.S. 422 when the shooting happened, Pennsylvania State Police said. She was treated and released from St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Youngstown. No charges were filed.
Snowplow truck stolen
AUSTINTOWN -- A pickup truck with a snowplow attached was stolen from Appollo Auto Sales on North Meridian Road. The truck, taken between 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, was found abandoned Wednesday morning on Interstate 680 eastbound by the Division Street exit, police said.
Trash, drug charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- James Bevly, 66, of Trenton Avenue received two citations Wednesday, one in the morning charging deposit of trash, rubbish and junk, and one in the evening charging possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia (pipe). Police said they saw Bevly's front yard littered with trash and newspapers and in the rear yard they found two junk cars and other trash. In the afternoon, members of the vice squad, in response to a complaint from a member of city council about illegal narcotics, visited the house. Police received consent to search the place. Reports show they found the pipe and suspected marijuana in a bedroom. Bevly reportedly told police: "That's just enough for a joint, I'm sick."
Crack pipe possession
YOUNGSTOWN -- Eric L. Mellinger, 33, of Broadway Street, Salem, was issued a citation Wednesday evening at a house in the 400 block of Idora Avenue charging him with possession of drug paraphernalia (crack pipe). Police then drove Mellinger to the Mahoning County-Columbiana County line and turned him over to a Columbiana County deputy sheriff. He was wanted there on a warrant charging him with failure to appear for sentencing on a drug charge.
Marijuana bags found
YOUNGSTOWN -- Bags of marijuana were seized from Blake B. Mannor's East Florida Avenue home Wednesday evening by members of the Vice Squad. Police said they had received complaints about drug sales at the house. Mannor gave consent to search the house, where they found bags of marijuana in the basement. Mannor, 23, was issued a citation.
Park donations needed
BRISTOLVILLE -- Bristol Township trustees say donations are still needed to continue lighting and decorating the township park. The lights have now been turned on for the Christmas season. Music in a good cause
BOARDMAN -- Dillard's, with stores in Boardman and Niles, is selling a holiday CD, Sing A Song of Christmas, to raise money for Ronald McDonald House Charities around the country and in the Mahoning Valley. The CD, which features artists such as Lee Ann Womack and Lionel Hampton, is available at both area stores for $7.
Library holiday hours
WARREN -- The Warren-Trumbull County Public Library will be closed Dec. 23-25, Dec. 31 and Jan. 1 for the holiday season. The closings will affect the main library in Warren and branches in Brookfield, Cortland, Howland, Liberty and Lordstown; and Homebound and Bookmobile customers.
Waterline begun
LORDSTOWN -- Village officials plan a Dec. 17 groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate construction of a redundant water supply line to serve the General Motors plant. This 24-inch-diameter line will extend about six miles from the Mahoning Valley Sanitary District to the village center. The groundbreaking will be near the fire station.
Church recovery event
WARREN -- The Body of Christ Church, 2025 W. Market St., sponsors an event at 5:30 p.m. Saturday at the church called "In The Potter's Hands." The event is a New Testament-based, 12-step program geared to help people with challenging life habits. Joe Ringold Jr. is the facilitator.
