Brothers get jail
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two Youngstown brothers will have to serve six months in jail before being released on probation after they pleaded guilty to burglary charges in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court.
Jeffrey Hammond, 24, and Raymond Hammond, 19, who listed addresses on First Street, entered their pleas earlier this week before Judge James C. Evans.
Police records show they broke into a Griffith Street apartment on the city's North Side on July 4 and threatened the female occupant.
They each originally were indicted on a charge of aggravated robbery with a firearm specification.
After a plea-bargain arrangement between their lawyers and Jay Macejko, an assistant county prosecutor, the gun specification was dismissed, and the Hammonds both pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of burglary.
They each could have received up to five years in prison and fined $10,000.
Judge Evans ruled they would spend the first six months in the county jail with credit for time they have served there since their arrest, which is 147 days.
After their release, they will be on a three-year probation supervised by the Adult Parole Authority.
