AAA Ohio, Pennsylvania motor clubs merge their territories

AAA has been consolidating its operations nationwide for years.
INDEPENDENCE -- AAA Ohio Motorists Association and the AAA East Central, based in Pittsburgh, will merge.
The new organization will have a membership of nearly 1.8 million and will be the seventh-largest AAA affiliate in North America.
The agreement was approved Thursday by the AAA National Board of Directors. As a result, OMA will be a wholly owned subsidiary of AAA East Central but will continue as a separate Ohio nonprofit corporation.
The merger will be effective Jan. 1.
The new territory of the merged organization will include headquarters in Cleveland and Pittsburgh and 72 offices to serve its members in those cities plus Youngstown, parts of southeast Ohio, western Pennsylvania, most of West Virginia and two counties in New York.
Background
AAA, a nonprofit federation of independent auto clubs in North America, has been consolidating operations across the United States and Canada for many years. In 1930, for example, there were close to 600 AAA clubs. Today, there are 53.
AAA also will be able to continue to support the important efforts of the Ohio Motorists Safety Foundation, a private, nonprofit 501(c) 3 foundation that promotes traffic and pedestrian safety throughout Northeast Ohio. In addition, AAA will also continue Ohio Motorists Association's 105-year tradition as the preeminent advocate for the rights of Ohio motorists in local, state and federal governments.
