AUSTINTOWN -- Two Warren residents and one from Niles were arrested after a police chase that stemmed from the reported theft of a power washer from the Handyman Store on Kirk Road.
An officer suffered minor injuries when his cruiser crashed during the pursuit.
Christopher M. Binion, 32, of West First Street, Niles, and Leann M. Gillian, 39, of Highlawn Street, Warren, were charged with theft, accused of taking the power washer valued at $150 from the store, according to police.
Police said they also charged Ronald F. Aiosa, 37, of Peach Lane, Warren, who drove the getaway car, with theft after failing to comply with an officer's signal to pull over.
All three were held in lieu of bond for appearances in Mahoning County Court. Two other passengers in the car were not charged.
High-speed pursuit
Police responded at 6:17 p.m. Wednesday to a report that the power washer had been stolen, and began pursuing a car after it failed to pull over when an officer activated his lights and siren.
The chase involved several near crashes along state Route 46 before the car turned onto South Turner Road, where it charged through wooden barricades and fled down the Mill Creek Bike Trail. After leaving the trail, the car turned onto Kirk Road, where it reached speeds of 85 mph before slowing down with mechanical problems and coming to a halt in North Jackson, according to police.
The power washer was found on the back seat while the accused were being arrested, police said.
Officer Justin J. Coulter, 28, was treated for minor injuries at St. Elizabeth's Health Center, after his cruiser struck a guardrail and tree at a bend on South Turner Road during the chase.
