BEN ROETHLISBERGER QB misses practice, but he expects to play
Duce Staley was also missing.
PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger didn't appear concerned about missing Sunday's game against the Jets, despite sitting out Wednesday's practice with a sore quadriceps.
Roethlisberger, the first rookie quarterback in NFL history to win his first 10 starts, plans to practice Thursday and seemed surprised when asked if he would be ready Sunday.
"Yeah, of course," Roethlisberger said. "Yes, I will play Sunday -- as long as coach [Bill] Cowher lets me."
Roethlisberger is listed as probable, meaning there is a 75 percent chance he will play.
Roethlisberger appeared to be limping at times during a 17-16 victory in Jacksonville on Sunday night, when he directed the late drive that led to Jeff Reed's decisive 37-yard field goal with 18 seconds to play.
Doesn't recall being hurt
Because he was seen limping, Roethlisberger was initially asked if he hurt his ankle. He doesn't remember the specific play on which he was hurt
Roethlisberger's backup, former starter Tommy Maddox, took most of the practice snaps with Roethlisberger out. Maddox hasn't played since injuring his right elbow during a 30-13 loss in Baltimore on Sept. 19.
Maddox hasn't played since and the Steelers (11-1) haven't lost since, winning 10 in a row behind Roethlisberger -- their longest streak since they won a team-record 11 straight during a 12-2 season in 1975.
Roethlisberger's passer rating of 103.2 is second in the AFC and his completion percentage of 67.7 is second only to Colts quarterback Peyton Manning's 71.1. Roethlisberger is on pace to easily surpass former Dolphins quarterback Dan Marino's 1983 rookie record completion rate of 58.45.
Steelers running back Duce Staley also missed practice Wednesday for what the team termed personal reasons. Staley carried 17 times for 51 yards Sunday after missing four games with a sore hamstring.
