BOARDMAN -- The American Cancer Society Boardman Relay for Life Committee is selling 2005 calendars featuring photographs of cancer survivors, committee members and others who participated in the Relay for Life last may at Boardman Center Middle School. Volunteer Jana Dambrogio took the photographs and completed the design. The 2005 calendar includes several photos and is dedicated in memory of Boardman native F.W. (Bill) Knecht, who died of cancer in January 2004. Calendars are available by contacting a member of the Boardman relay committee or by calling the American Cancer Society at (330) 533-0546, or visiting the society's office, 525 North Broad Street, state Route 46, Canfield.
Carjacking reported
YOUNGSTOWN -- Three Austintown teenagers told police they were robbed and carjacked early Tuesday. The driver said the robbery occurred when he began to turn onto Edwards Street from Parkwood Avenue around 1:40 a.m. and a gunman, who they estimated is 16, and his female companion approached the 1989 Chevrolet Corsica. The robbers got into the car and an order was given to drive the female to the 800 block of Edwards. After dropping her off, the teenager with the gun took a total of $22 from the victims and the ride continued. The gunman eventually drove off with the car after ordering the victims out.
2 injured in crash
YOUNGSTOWN -- Two city men were taken to St. Elizabeth Health Center on Monday after a two-car crash on Salts Springs Road. The injuries were not listed as life-threatening. Police issued a citation to John Makar, 29, of Cameron Avenue that charges him with failure to yield while making a left turn. Police said Richard Lobaugh, 22, of Winchester Avenue was traveling northbound on Salt Springs around 4:30 p.m. when Makar, traveling southbound, attempted to turn onto Geoffrey Trail and collided with Lobaugh's car.
Concealed weapon
YOUNGSTOWN -- The Mahoning County jail would not accept Melvin Wilson's leather case with two pool cue sticks when he was taken there Monday evening to be booked on a charge of carrying a concealed weapon. Police agreed to hold the sticks in an evidence room. Wilson, 44, of Hillman Street, was stopped and questioned on Idlewood Avenue by officers who were checking out a report of a burglary suspect. Police said Wilson had an unloaded handgun and ammunition in his jacket.
5-vehicle accident
GIRARD -- Police are investigating a five-vehicle crash that blocked Interstate 80 for a time Tuesday night. The accident started in the eastbound lane, but one of the vehicles involved crossed the median into the westbound lane, city police said. Some injuries were reported, but the victims' names and the nature of their injuries were not available. The crash occurred about 8:15 p.m.
Aggravated arson
YOUNGSTOWN -- Melvin E. Tennant Jr., 39, of East Lucius Avenue was arraigned Tuesday in municipal court on an aggravated arson charge. His bond was set at $35,000 and he will be back in court Dec. 14 for a preliminary hearing. Fire investigator Kevin Johnson said Tennant tried to set fire to his mother's house, where he resides.
City tree lighting
YOUNGSTOWN -- The city's annual Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony will be at 4 p.m. Saturday in the Central Square. Hot cocoa and snacks will be provided.
Canfield meeting
CANFIELD -- Township trustees will have a special meeting at 6 p.m. today at township hall, 21 S. Broad St. Trustees will have a closed-door meeting to discuss personnel.
Howland school board
HOWLAND -- The board of education will meet in special session at 8 a.m. Dec. 17 at the administration offices, 8200 South St. S.E., for a work session and any other business it needs to handle.
