BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP Campbell Memorial soars behind Soares
Red Devils defeated Brookfield to put an end to a two-game losing streak.
CAMPBELL -- Trey Soares scored 14 points and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds as Campbell Memorial High handed Brookfield its first loss after two straight wins, 52-33, in a boys basketball game Tuesday.
The win broke a two-game losing streak for Campbell (2-2).
Soares, a junior, also added three steals and two blocked shots, while sophomore Jermaine Richardson had a career-high 12 points, and junior Terrence Phillips added 10 points and four assists.
Luke Mortimer, and Cory Richards had 10 points each to lead Brookfield, while Sam King scored five and added six assists and four steals.
Brookfield scored the first eight points of the game before the Red Devils managed to close the quarter out on a 9-2 run to trail 10-9. Teyon Harris scored five points in the run, and his basket with 7:02 to play in the first half gave Campbell the lead at 11-10. Soares then followed with a 3-point basket to increase the advantage to 14-10. Ricky Henson scored for Brookfield to close the gap to 14-12, but Campbell scored the next seven points and the lead was never less than five points the rest of the game.
Campbell had 28 rebounds to 27 for the Warriors. King, Richards, and Mortimer had five rebounds each for Brookfield. The Warriors were 15-of-41 from the field, while Campbell was 22-of-46.
Brookfield suffered 22 turnovers to 16 for the Red Devils. Brookfield missed all seven of their 3-point attempts.
Howland 60, Newton Falls 57, OT
NEWTON FALLS -- Ryan Johnson pumped in 23 points to lead Howland (1-2).
Chad Rankin and Ryan Romack paced Newton Falls (2-1), with 22 and 10 points, respectively.
