Arson suspected in fire that destroyed building
YOUNGSTOWN -- City firefighters are investigating a suspicious blaze that destroyed a boarding house and caused injuries to two people at 210 N. Hine St.
Fire officials said that when they arrived at 12:25 a.m. Monday, they found the front of the house on fire, with the front porch roof collapsing.
Two injured men, Randall Stubbs and Timothy Gains, were transported to hospitals. Firefighters believe Stubbs may have broken a hip while exiting the house through a first-floor bathroom window. Gains was treated for smoke inhalation.
The fire department didn't say where the injured men were taken. Fire personnel believe someone set the outside of the house on fire.
Soldiers off to Mideast to support war effort
VIENNA -- Approximately 20 Air Force reservists from the 910th Airlift Wing based here are scheduled to leave today for about 90 days in the Middle Eastern country of Qatar. They will support operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom.
Mineral Ridge school to host concerts
MINERAL RIDGE -- The Mineral Ridge High School chorus and band concert will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at the high school auditorium.
Other scheduled concerts, which will all take place in the high school auditorium, include: the Seaborn Elementary School fourth-grade Christmas program at 7 p.m. Dec. 14; the middle school band concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 15, and the middle school chorus Christmas program at 7 p.m. Dec. 16.
Police use shotgun to kill fighting dogs
WARREN -- City police officers used a shotgun Sunday to put down two severely injured, fighting dogs at a Van Wye home.
Officers were called to 2353 Van Wye at 3 p.m. to find blood all over the porch area, and the dogs severely injured about the neck, throat and head. They were unable to contact the dogs' owner and voice commands to the animals could not distract them, a police report states. Officers used Mace to break up the dogs, and the dogs began to run off. The report said the dogs were vicious and there was "no other option" but to shoot them.
Car strikes pedestrian, driver leaves scene
WARREN -- A resident of the Buckeye Apartments was hit by a car at 1000 W. Market St. as he walked about 5:30 p.m. Saturday. Robert Canidate was treated at St. Joseph Health Center after being struck by the westbound vehicle, which fled the scene. Police reported he fell on the road and his hand was then run over by an eastbound car.
Woman tells police of assault by candle
WARREN -- A Charles Street Southeast woman reported to police that a woman she knows threw a lighted candle through her window at 5:30 a.m. Sunday.
Oil company reports theft of snow blower
WARREN -- Hood Oil Co., 751 E. Market St., reported to police Sunday that someone broke into the business and took a snow blower.
Store gets bad check
WARREN -- Employees at Quick Shop, 960 Mahoning Ave. N.W., told police someone passed a bad check for $2,329.
Father-son fight results in stabbing
WARREN-- A fight between father and son led to a stabbing. Police report the father was striking the son with a board, and the son stabbed him with a steak knife Friday. The juvenile was taken to the juvenile justice center. William Hether, 45, of Parkman Road N.W. was treated at Forum Health Trumbull Memorial Hospital.
