SOUTH SIDE Man, 32, dies in shooting at liquor store
Police said at least five bullets hit the car, with at least two hitting the victim.
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 32-year-old local man was fatally ambushed in a hail of bullets Sunday evening as he waited in his car at a drive-through liquor store on the South Side.
Jerome Miller was pulled up at Gina's Drive-Thru at 1942 Glenwood Ave. when at least one masked youth raced up to his car, firing wildly, according to Youngstown Police Capt. Robert Kane and witnesses.
Miller, who went by "Snap," hit the gas, swung back around the rear of the store, slammed into some woods and tore through a chain-link fence, Kane said.
The car came to rest in the back yard of a home on West Warren Avenue, the rear window of the Buick Rivera blasted through by gunfire.
A policeman on the scene said at least five bullets hit the car and at least two hit Miller. He died at the scene, slumped over the wheel, the engine still running.
Police would not give Miller's address.
A hysterical woman arrived at the scene saying the car belonged to her brother and he had been with Miller. But other women with her quieted her and they refused to answer police questions.
Kane said Miller appeared to be alone in the car.
Miller was the city's 18th homicide victim of 2004. There were 17 homicides reported in Youngstown on this date in 2003.
