Penguins aren't ready to cool off
The team can eclipse last year's win total by beating Akron today.
YOUNGSTOWN -- Playing its sixth game in 12 days, the Youngstown State women's basketball team goes for its second-straight win when it hosts Akron today at 2 p.m.
The game will be broadcast on WNIO-AM (1390).
The Penguins are coming off a 53-42 victory over Toledo on Thursday. Senior Jen Perugini led the Penguins with 14 points and 15 rebounds, while Cathy Hanek posted 11 second-half points.
With three wins in its first six games, YSU has already tied the number of games it won last season. It also marks the Penguins' best start since the 1999-2000 season when they started 3-0.
The Zips are 0-5 after dropping a 77-68 decision to IPFW on Thursday. Angie Hutchinson came off the bench to lead the Zips with 16 points, while Courtney Stewart added 10.
Zips' stats
Akron is averaging 52 points per game and shooting 34.9 percent from the floor. Hutchinson and Jessie Crooks lead the Zips in scoring at 6.8 points per game apiece. Senior Lindsay Hemmelgarn is averaging 6.6 points per game.
Perugini's countdown to 1,000 career points continues. The 2002 Horizon League newcomer of the year has 919 career points and needs 81 more to become the 16th player in school history with at least 1,000.
Perugini leads the Horizon League at 17.7 points and 12.2 rebounds per game and a 3-point percentage of .692. The 6-foot-2 forward is seventh in blocked shots at 1.2 blocks per game and is ninth with an .808 free throw percentage.
This will be the 43rd meeting between Youngstown State and Akron, with the Penguins owning a 31-11 lead in the series. Last year, the Zips snapped a seven-game losing streak to the Penguins with a 67-62 double overtime victory in the JAR Arena. The last time these two teams met in Beeghly Center, the Penguins came away victorious, 68-59. The last time Akron won in Beeghly Center was during the 1994-95 season, 59-56.
The Penguins will get five days off during finals week before hosting defending MAC tournament champion Eastern Michigan on Dec. 11. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m. as part of a men's and women's doubleheader.
