NOTEBOOK Mooney vs. Versailles
Mentor's pride: Former Cardinal Mooney coach and current athletic director Don Bucci had a huge smile on his face after the game. He was particularly proud of current coach P.J. Fecko, who played for Bucci and was later an assistant coach. "I am so satisfied and so proud to see someone who played and coached for me, who came up through the ranks, achieve this," said Bucci. "His hard work and dedication have paid off."
Versailles reaction: The players and coach Al Hetrick voiced their thoughts on Mooney's speed and strength in interviews following the game. Hetrick said the Cardinals were the fastest team he had coached against all season. Lineman Mark Keiser added, "They were the most physical team we played all year. They also have very good technqiue. It took awhile, about a quarter, to get used to their speed. We just couldn't simulate that in practice." Another lineman, Doug Meier, added, "They really come off the ball."
Somebody catch this thing: It took more than 22 minutes before the first pass completion of the game. Versailles' Tony McNeilan passed to Stephen Winner for 12 yards with 1:33 remaining in the second quarter.
