Illinois works overtime to snap La. Tech streak



The Lady Techsters had not dropped a home game in two years.

RUSTON, La. -- Angelina Williams scored 24 points, including a 3-pointer that forced overtime, and Illinois upset No. 21 Louisiana Tech, 71-65.
The Illini (4-1) snapped La Tech's 30-game home winning streak. Tech had not lost a home game since a setback against Tennessee on Dec. 4, 2002. It appeared Tech (3-2) had the upper hand after Tasha Crain's 12-foot jumper with 10 seconds left. But Williams banked in a 3-pointer, forcing overtime.
Illinois never trailed after Danyel Crutcher's basket for a 60-58 lead. Crutcher led the Illini with 12 points and Tiffanie Guthrie had 11 points, four assists and three blocks. Crain led Tech with 16 points.
No. 7 Texas 73, New Mexico 56
ALBUQUERQUE -- Senior guard Jamie Carey scored a career-high 28 points, including six 3-pointers, to lead No. 7 Texas past New Mexico 73-56 on Saturday.
Carey, who scored 19 first-half points, finished 9-of-14 from the field, including 6-of-8 from 3-point range. Kala Bowers was the only other Longhorn in double figures with 12 points.
Lindsey Arndt had 15 points and Fatima Maddox added 12 for the Lobos (4-1).
Texas (4-2) led 34-26 at halftime and New Mexico came within seven with 13:23 left. But the Longhorns blocked shots and forced turnovers, pulling ahead 61-43 behind Heather Schreiber's seven straight points.
No. 9 Baylor 73, Jackson State 56
GREENVILLE, N.C. -- Steffanie Blackmon scored 17 points and had nine rebounds to lead No. 9 Baylor over Jackson State in the opener of the Lady Pirate Invitational.
Emily Niemann had 14 points while Sophia Young added 10 for the Lady Bears (5-1). Angela Tisdale led the Baylor offense with eight assists.
Baylor, which led 31-19 at the half, shot a season-best 49 percent despite going 4-of-15 from 3-point range. Baylor will play the East Carolina-Stephen F. Austin winner in the championship game on Sunday.
Shante Stanford led the Lady Tigers (1-2) with 21 points.
No. 13 Vanderbilt 93, Miami (Ohio) 50
OXFORD, Ohio -- Ashley Earley scored 25 points and Carla Thomas added 21 and 13th-ranked Vanderbilt beat Miami of Ohio.
Earley made 10 of 12 shots from the field and all five free throws. She also had 15 rebounds to post her third double-double of the season.
Dee Davis added 18 points and Abi Ramsey finished with 16 for the Commodores (6-0). Davis had 10 assists and Thomas had 10 rebounds.
Amber Miller scored 11 points to lead Miami (4-2), last season's Mid-American Conference regular-season champions.
No. 15 Michigan St. 77, Cincinnati 61
CINCINNATI -- Lindsay Bowen scored 28 points and No. 15 Michigan State outscored Cincinnati by 17 points in the second half to beat the Bearcats.
Bowen, who made 10 of 20 shots, was backed by Liz Shimek and Kelli Roehrig with 18 points apiece for the Spartans (6-1). Roehrig had 12 rebounds and Shimek 11. Karen Twehues led Cincinnati (3-3) with 16 points and Toni Slaughter had 15.
No. 20 Boston College 90, Northeastern 63
BOSTON -- Jessalyn Deveny scored six of her season-high 22 points in a key 12-1 run to lead No. 20 Boston College past Northeastern.
Clare Droesch had 13 points and Aja Parham added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Eagles (5-1).
Shaleyse Smallwood had 16 points and Maralene Zwarich 15 to lead the Huskies (2-4).
No. 22 Maryland 74, Xavier 72
CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Crystal Langhorne had 18 points and 11 rebounds, leading No. 22 Maryland to a win over Xavier on Saturday.
Kalika France scored 13 of her 21 points in the second half for Maryland (5-1). Tara Boothe, helped by 9-for-10 shooting from the line, finished with 23 points for Xavier (1-3).
