RECOGNITION Cancer society honors volunteers at banquet
Dinner and an awards ceremony were Nov. 18.
BOARDMAN -- The Mahoning County Unit of the American Cancer Society honored volunteers at its annual recognition dinner and awards banquet Nov. 18 at The Georgetown.
Dr. Karl Wieneke of Boardman received the Honorary Lifetime Board Member Award. A board member since 1968, he was elected in 1974 to a two-year term as president of the unit and has served as a medical delegate since 1975. He has also served on numerous committees, chaired various special events and held a variety of positions as a director.
Selected as the Income Development Volunteer of the Year was Dr. Robert DeMarco of Boardman. He is a Mahoning County and Ohio Division board director, a member of the lung cancer advisory committee and the past chairman of the Boardman Relay for Life. Under his guidance, the Boardman relay has raised more than $2 million and has been the second largest relay in the state since it started in 1995.
Health Promotions Volunteer of the Year is Corlis Green of Youngstown. Besides serving as a Mahoning County board director, she is a facilitator of Tell A Friend and Look Good ... Feel Better. In 2000 she was recognized as an outstanding cosmetologist and received the Sunshine LGFB award from the Ohio Division of ACS. She attends the annual Ohio Division ACS Lobby Day in Columbus and has served in various capacities on other committees.
