GIRLS ROUNDUP Niles coach Martin gets first win, 41-26



Salem coasted past Canton Central Catholic, 54-26.
NILES -- Jessica Pallante scored 11 points as the Niles High girls basketball team won their first game of the season, 41-26, over Campbell Memorial on Wednesday.
The win was also the first for new Niles coach and former Youngstown State player Ann Marie Martin.
Nina Gabrelcik added nine points while Kelly Leonard and Stephanie Parish had six each for the Red Ragons (1-2). Leonard had eight rebounds while Leonard added six assists.
For Campbell (1-2) Dana Moore led the way with seven points, while Maria Rohan and Sophia Brown had six each. Brown added six rebounds.
Campbell suffered 28 turnovers while Niles had 25. The Red Dragons had 37 rebounds to 31 for the Red Devils.
After Campbell had a early 6-2 lead Niles scored the last eight points of the first quarter to take a 10-6 lead. The Red Devils managed just three points in the second quarter and the Red Dragons led 20-9 at the break.
Salem 54, Canton Cent. Cath. 26
CANTON -- Katherine McGarry and Sarah Hamilton led the Quakers (3-0) with 14 and 13 points, respectively.
McGarry made 8-of-10 free throws for Salem. She, Hamilton, Vanessa Kelly and Jessica Hamilton all had four rebounds. Jessica Hamilton also had four assists and four steals, Sarah Hamilton had seven steals, and Jessica Potts had five steals.
Garrettsville 50,Newton Falls 49
NEWTON FALLS -- Newton Falls made a terrific comeback in the fourth quarter, but fell just short in its bid for its first win of the season.
The Tigers (0-3) trailed 36-22 after three periods, but outscored Garrettsville 27-14 in the fourth quarter. Newton Falls actually tied the score at 48-all with about 10 seconds remaining, but a Garrettsville player made two free throws with six seconds to go. Newton Falls was fouled just before the buzzer, but missed the first of two foul shots.
Molly Lenarcic led the Tigers with 17 points, while Lindsay Davis added 12 and Emily Montgomery scored 10.
Katie Etling of Garrettsville (1-2) led all scorers with 29 points.
Py Valley 56, Mineral Ridge 11
ANDOVER -- Nikki Hazlett scored 13 points and Michelle Lautanen added 10 for the Lakers (2-0).
Mineral Ridge (2-3) was led by Elyse Hawout with 5 points.
