South Side woman files Web site complaint
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 52-year-old South Side woman filed a telecommunications harassment complaint with police Monday, saying that her name, date of birth, address and Social Security number had been posted on the message board operated by the Democrats of the 17th and 6th Districts at www.dems17.org/board.htm. She said the information appeared Saturday and she contacted Youngstown attorney Mark Belinky, who oversees the board, to remove the information, which he did. The woman said the same information was posted again. Her complaint was turned over to detectives. She said she will contact America Online to pursue charges.
Deportation issue
YOUNGSTOWN -- A hold from the U.S. Department of Immigration and Naturalization Service was placed on Jose F. Lugo-Lago of Campbell after his arrest Monday on traffic charges. Lugo-Lago, 28, of Water Street, was stopped by police in the 1900 block of McCartney Road after using the center left-turn-only lane to pass cars. He was charged with driving under suspension and given an improper lane use citation. The officer was advised that there was a deportation issue with Lugo-Lago and that he was to remain in the Mahoning County jail pending further verification.
Weapon, drug charges
YOUNGSTOWN -- Randy Johnson, 30, of Burlington Street was arrested at 10:30 p.m. Monday on charges of carrying a concealed weapon, illegal possession of a weapon (based on a prior conviction), trafficking in marijuana, possession of dangerous drugs and driving under suspension. When police approached Johnson in the 1300 block of Wick Avenue near Bissell Avenue, he left his car and hurried into a store, reports show. Officers entered the store. Police said they found a loaded handgun in Johnson's waistband, 16 bags of suspected marijuana and nine white pills in his pants pocket.
Drug trafficking charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- Eric Merchant, 33, of Halleck Street was stopped by police at 10:20 p.m. Monday on the South Side for a minor traffic violation -- no rear license plate light -- and arrested on charges of trafficking in marijuana and driving under suspension (failure to pay child support). He was also given a citation for failure to illuminate the rear plate. Police said they found 31 packaged-for-sale bags of suspected marijuana under the driver's seat.
Extradition hearing
YOUNGSTOWN -- Johnny D. West, 54, of Choice Court will remain in the Mahoning County jail pending an extradition hearing, police said. West's 1988 Cadillac was stopped by police at Tuesday on Market Street for having a broken front headlight. Police discovered that the Sacramento, Calif., Parole and Community Services Division had issued a warrant for West.
Traffic citation
YOUNGSTOWN -- A yellow dune buggy that sailed through a red light on Rush Boulevard on Monday afternoon was stopped in the 200 block of East Dewey, reports show. The driver, Allan Noble Jr., 24, of East LaClede Avenue, was issued a citation charging prohibited operation of an off-road vehicle and failure to obey a red light.
Aggravated menacing
YOUNGSTOWN -- Anthony J. Smith, 43, of Norwood Avenue was arrested Monday evening on charges of aggravated menacing and theft after the owner of the Red and White Market on Elm Street identified him as the man who stole a bottle of wine.
Murder trial is set
WARREN -- A jury trial is set for Feb. 22 for Timothy J. Smith of Kenwood Drive Southwest, charged in the September 25 killing of his wife, Lizette. Smith waived his right to a speedy trial Tuesday. His jury trial will be before Judge Andrew Logan of Trumbull County Common Pleas Court. Police said Lizette Smith was stabbed multiple times. The couple had been married a little more than two years. Police charged her husband with murder.
