Sheriff Wellington should take his show on the road
Sheriff Wellington should take his show on the road
EDITOR:
Just wanted to say I have been enjoying the new comic strip in the paper -- though it doesn't have a name yet -- I'm gonna suggest Wellington's Gang. Every time (seems monthly and sometimes biweekly) one of his deputy sheriffs is arrested, our chief is "shocked and outraged," not to mention "disappointed." What a laugh.
His deputy when caught stealing said, "I was going to go back tomorrow and pay for it." Hilarious. Was there an ice storm on Thanksgiving that I missed and he needed that ice melt for his elderly neighbors or is he just a common thief?
Wellington claims he didn't know how Maj. Michael Budd ran things. Again, what a laugh. The sheriff doesn't know what he is going to do without the tax dollars that the fine people of Mahoning County decided he didn't need. Again a chuckle there. Maybe if he needs money, he should take Maj. Budd off paid leave. Maybe he should clean house.
There is a zero-tolerance policy at the Shops at Boardman Park for skateboarding, loud music and such, but there is a great tolerance for taking the law into your own hands and theft in the sheriff's department. I am sure that the hardworking, noncriminal deputy sheriffs would like to get rid of the "rogues" because they have integrity and then there may be enough money to cover their salaries.
Here is an idea: maybe Wellington could give up his salary to his officers who are actually doing their jobs. He seems to have a future in comedy.

The Russians were coming then; now it's terrorists
EDITOR:
I can remember when the bogeyman was the Russians -- that's all you heard from the government: The Russians are coming!
Well the Russians never did come, and I knew that when I was 12. Now it's: The terrorists are coming! Now I am 57, and I want to tell you, folks, that nobody is coming. Just like I knew when I was younger, it's all about the money.
Remember when the Russians were coming? The Russians could not even feed their own people, let alone come and get us. The government kept telling us that the Russians were coming and made little children hide under their school desks and adults were busy building bomb shelters in their backyards.
Now it's 2004 and the government is telling us that the terrorist are coming . Where are the terrorists coming from? What should we do when the terrorists get here? The government said to buy some duct tape.
If you were around when the Russians were coming and you are still here, then you can see the same thing happening all over again. The terrorists are coming, so now we have to take some of your rights away. Then we have to spend more of your hard earned tax dollars to keep another bogeyman away -- and by the way, don't forget to go out and buy some duct tape.
We were given our rights by men who had your freedom on their minds when they wrote the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Yes, this is the only real free country in the world, and I fought for it when the call came. Every child has the right to an equal education. Every person has the right to earn a living. And all the rights that were given to us by the men before our time should not be taken away by men that only have one thing on their minds -- our money and how to take more of it away from us.
Take all the money that we are throwing away fighting the terrorists who will not be coming and use it to educate every child and create jobs. The real bogeyman is our own government and the people who we have elected.
