Liberty's Bowman tabbed defensive co-player of year



He shares the honor with Versailles' Kevin Paulus, who faces Mooney for a state title.

COLUMBUS -- Liberty High's Marcellus Bowman is the Division IV defensive co-player of the year.
Bowman helped Liberty to an 11-2 record, including two postseason victories.
He was joined on the Div. IV first team by Ryan Collins (receiver) of Girard, Mooney linemen Mike Philibin and Rick Solak, Ursuline running back Alex Allen and United defensive back Bubba Taylor.
Derrick Stewart and Corey Maizel of Ursuline, Kyle McCarthy of Mooney and Keith Forestal of Liberty were named to the second team.
In Div. III, Alliance's Ron Kuceyeski was named co-coach of the year. He led the Aviators to a 9-3 record and the Metro Athletic Conference championship.
Players selected in Div. III were kicker Bryan Wright of Salem, receiver Chris Banks and running back Kendell Davis, both of Alliance, and defensive back Dan Kinsey of Beaver Local.
Second team selections were Brian Boyce of Hubbard, Trent White and Steve Love of Alliance, and Josh Weese of Beaver Local.
Tyrell Sutton of Akron Hoban was the offensive player of the year in Div. III. The defensive honorees were Cleveland Benedictine defensive back Joe Cigas and Columbus Eastmoor Academy linebacker Prince Moody, and Lima Shawnee's Dick West joined Kuceyeski as coaches of the year.
Other Division IV picks
Upper Sandusky quarterback Greg Micheli and Delta running back Nate Kmic were the top offensive performers in Div. IV. Versailles lineman Kevin Paulus, who will lead the defending champion Tigers against Moody on Friday, was named defensive co-player of the year. The coaches of the year were New Albany's Mike Golden and Heath Hinton of Wellston.
Sutton carried 354 times for 3,232 yards and scored 38 touchdowns for Hoban, pushing his career totals to 9,426 yards and 117 touchdowns.
Cigas is a two-time All-Ohioan who starred on both sides of the ball for Benedictine (11-3), which will be trying to repeat its Division III state title on Saturday morning against St. Marys Memorial at Fawcett Stadium in Canton.
Moody, a 5-11, 190-pound senior, had 15 tackles for negative yardage, eight sacks and intercepted two passes for a 9-1 team. He also averaged 10.4 yards per carry and scored 16 touchdowns as a fullback.
West led Shawnee to its first Western Buckeye League title since 1966 and its first playoff appearance ever.
Micheli was a dual-threat quarterback, passing for 3,012 yards and 31 touchdowns with just nine interceptions and also running for 1,034 yards and 15 scores. Kmic scored 294 points -- the fifth-highest total ever in Ohio -- for Delta while rushing for 1,681 yards.
