Balent's 22 pace Jackson-Milton over Lordstown
Lakeview opened its season at home and ran away from Bristol.
LORDSTOWN -- Mark Balent scored 22 points, and Josh Rybak and Andrew Whitmer also reached double figures, to lead Jackson-Milton High past Lordstown, 58-53, in a boys basketball game Tuesday night.
Rybak scored 12 points and Whitmer notched 10 for the Bluejays, who improved their record to 2-1.
Lordstown, playing its season opener, was led by Brandon Wickline, who finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Jake Dieugenio added 12 points, while Max Gibson had four assists.
Jackson-Milton took control of the game in the first and third quarters, when the Bluejays outscored the Red Devils 19-13 in each period.
Lakeview 74, Bristol 45
CORTLAND -- Lakeview opened its season with a victory, jumping out to a 23-10 lead after one quarter and a 41-23 edge at the intermission.
Mike Robinson led four Bulldogs in double figures, scoring 15 points. He scored 11 points in the decisive first half.
Ed Mackiewitz scored 14 points for Lakeview, while Mark Seter finished with 12 and Trevor Mathews with 10. Alex Kolcsov had 11 rebounds and nine assists, leading the Bulldogs in both categories.
Mitch King scored eight points to lead Bristol, also playing in its first game of the season.
Newton Falls 32, Garrettsville 30
NEWTON FALLS -- Eric Medallis scored eight points to lead Newton Falls in the low-scoring game.
T.J. Balint had nine rebounds for the Tigers (2-0), who trailed 17-16 at halftime but took control in the third quarter by outscoring the G-Men, 11-6.
Greg Collins scored 13 points for Garrettsville (1-1).
Brookfield 49, Badger 40
KINSMAN -- Brookfield opened its season a winning note, jumping out to a 12-5 lead after the first quarter. Badger stayed close, trailing only 30-26 after three periods.
Sam King led the Warriors with 17 points and six assists. Ryan Logan scored 12 points and Cory Richards had seven rebounds.
For Badger (1-1), Anthony Mancini finished with 16 points and Norm Wynnucci added 14.
Beaver Local 61, East Palestine 55
EAST PALESTINE -- Brett Young had a good game for East Palestine, finishing with 23 points and six rebounds.
The Bulldogs (0-2) led 23-14 after the first period and 37-33 at halftime, but fell behind as Beaver Local (2-0) outscored them 17-10 in the third quarter.
Dan Hanolt added 10 points for East Palestine, while Joe Thompson had 10 rebounds and three assists. Zac Dunn also had three assists.
Other games
LaBrae defeated Howland, 58-56; McDonald defeated Mathews 69-48, and Mineral Ridge defeated Maplewood 72-69 in three overtimes. Details of these games were not reported.
