Attempted robbery probe
BOARDMAN -- Township police continue searching for leads in an attempted aggravated robbery that was reported early Monday.
Police said a 31-year-old Youngstown man walked from his downtown Phelps Street home at 3 a.m. to an ATM on Hillman Way in the township. Police said the man told them he walked the extended distance to the machine "because he wasn't thinking straight."
Police said the man reached the ATM about 4 a.m. He reported that just before sliding his card into the machine, a man standing behind him with a gun demanded all his money. Police said the Youngstown man ran and heard two shots fired behind him as he fled. Township police said he was spotted by Youngstown police walking a short time later, minus his shirt. The man told police he took the shirt off so the would-be robber would not spot him. He was not injured and managed to flee before giving the robber any money.
Domestic violence charge
YOUNGSTOWN -- Police accused a Shehy Street man of punching the mother of his child, pointing a gun at her, and threatening to kill her. Police charged Dejuan Thomas, 22, with domestic violence, resisting arrest, and obstructing official business. Police said Thomas was sitting in a car in the driveway of a Hilton Avenue home at 1:40 a.m. Monday when they arrived to investigate a call about a fight.
Thomas ran from officers when they approached, reports state. He was arrested behind an East Auburndale Avenue garage. Police said Thomas struggled with them as he was arrested. The mother of Thomas' child told police that Thomas had pointed a gun at her, threatened to kill her, and punched her in the eye.
Food bank donations
CANFIELD -- The Pampered Chef will sell apples at the Canfield Fair to benefit Second Harvest Food Bank. Apples will be available for $1 at the commercial tent in building 60 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Wednesday through Monday. Pampered Chef is an in-home direct seller of high-quality kitchen tools. Second Harvest Food Bank provides food to 200 hunger-relief organizations throughout Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties.
Livestock auction
CANFIELD -- The Mahoning County Livestock Auction, featuring 4-H and Future Farmers of America project animals, will begin at 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the Canfield Fairgrounds. The auction is open to the public as well as commercial butchers and supermarkets. Local meat processors will cut and wrap purchases per buyers' specifications. For precise times, consult the Junior Fair schedule.
Pedestrian killed
NEW CASTLE, Pa. -- An 87-year-old woman crossing a street died after she was hit by a 90-year-old driver on Wilmington Road. City police said Doris Johnson of West Moody Avenue was crossing at West Moody Avenue at 12:18 p.m. Monday when she was hit by a car that apparently went through a red light. Police said the car kept going after hitting Johnson. She was taken to Jameson Hospital and then St. Elizabeth Health Center in Youngstown, where she died.
The driver, Allan Wright, 90, of McClelland Avenue, apparently didn't realize he had hit the pedestrian, police said. He was later found and taken to Jameson Hospital for observation, police said. The accident is under investigation.
Show Your Spirit
LIBERTY -- Township officials will host a Show Your Spirit Community Celebration Night starting at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Liberty High School football field. The event serves as a kickoff to the high school football season and gives residents a chance to meet participants in fall sports and to see the high school marching band perform. Live entertainment, food and a 50-50 drawing are also scheduled, as is a fireworks extravaganza by Pyrotechnico. The event is free and is sponsored by the Liberty business community, the board of education, township trustees and the park improvement committee.
Woman faces charge
GIRARD -- An arrest warrant has been issued for a second woman in connection with the taking of $3,000 from a Girard man. Capt. Frank Bigowsky said Susan Ferry of Chestnut Street, Weathersfield Township, is charged with aggravated robbery. Also charged in the case is Michelle Cox, a homeless 26-year-old, who is in Trumbull County Jail. An East Main Street man told police he was swimming at his home with the two women Aug. 15 when he was struck over the head and forced to give up the combination to his safe. A preliminary hearing is set for Cox at 1 p.m. Wednesday in municipal court. She was captured in Mercer, Pa.
