NATIONAL LEAGUE Padres' Peavy wins his sixth straight game

The Marlins extended the Rockies' losing streak to six.

MONTREAL -- Jake Peavy won his sixth straight decision, and Phil Nevin homered and drove in three runs in the San Diego Padres' 5-2 victory over the Montreal Expos on Saturday night.
Peavy (11-3), unbeaten in nine starts since the All-Star break, held Montreal to five hits and two runs in 62/3 innings. It was the 18th time in 20 starts he's allowed two earned runs or less.
Trevor Hoffman struck out the side in the ninth for his 33rd save in 37 chances.
Ramon Hernandez also homered for San Diego, which pulled one game behind Chicago in the NL wild-card race.
With the game tied at 2 in the fourth, Hernandez hit a leadoff homer off John Patterson (3-3) to put the Padres up 3-2. Nevin and Ryan Klesko hit consecutive two-out singles later in the inning to chase Patterson.
Peavy, who has a 2.25 ERA, retired 16 in a row during one stretch after allowing both Montreal runs in the first.
Brad Wilkerson hit a leadoff single and, one out later, scored on Tony Batista's RBI double. Peavy struck out Juan Rivera before Terrmel Sledge walked and Brian Schneider hit a run-scoring single to put the Expos up 2-0.
Nevin tied it at 2 in the third with a two-run homer off Patterson.
Montreal rookie Maicer Izturis hit a leadoff double in the second, and was the Expos' last baserunner until Carroll reached on shortstop Khalil Greene's throwing error with one out in the seventh.
Peavy got Izturis swinging for his sixth strikeout before pinch-hitter Henry Mateo's single brought Padres manager Bruce Bochy out of the dugout to end Peavy's outing.
With runners at first and third, left-hander Scott Linebrink got Wilkerson to fly to left to maintain San Diego's three-run lead.
Originally scheduled to start Friday, Patterson had his start moved back a day as he recovered from the flu earlier this week. He allowed nine hits and five runs while throwing 96 pitches in just 3 2-3 innings.

MIAMI -- Juan Encarnacion hit a two-run single in the first inning and a go-ahead, two-run homer in the eighth to extend the Rockies' losing streak to six.
With Colorado leading 3-2 in the eighth, Jeff Conine singled off Steve Reed (3-4) leading off and Encarnacion followed with his 14th homer.
Encarnacion, in a 1-for-11 slide coming in, hit a bases-loaded single with two outs in the first off Jason Jennings.
Carl Pavano (15-5) allowed three runs and seven hits in eight innings, and Armando Benitez finished with a perfect ninth for his 38th save in 41 chances. Jennings gave up two runs and six hits in six innings.
The defending World Series champions, who have won four of their last six games, closed with 51/2 games of the Chicago Cubs, the NL wild-card leader.

PHILADELPHIA -- Placido Polanco homered off Mike Adams with one out in the ninth inning to extend the Brewers' losing streak to 10.
Polanco hit his 12th homer of the season on a 0-2 pitch by Adams (2-2), capping a rally from a 3-0 deficit. The Phillies are 5-0 against Milwaukee this season but have lost 12 of their last 13 games against teams other than the Brewers.
Phillies starter Randy Wolf left after three innings because of what the team said was slight inflammation in his left elbow. Wolf missed 16 games with tendinitis in the elbow. Five relievers combined for six shutout innings, with Tim Worrell (4-5) striking out two in a perfect ninth.

CINCINNATI -- Casey Fossum combined with four relievers on a four-hitter, and Juan Brito singled home the go-ahead run in the seventh inning to lead Arizona.
The Diamondbacks have won consecutive games for the first time since Aug. 3-4 against Florida, and have won two in a row on the road for the first time since June 10 at Baltimore and June 11 at Toronto.
Fossum (4-12) allowed two runs, three hits, four walks and two hit batters in six innings, winning consecutive decisions for the first time since May 6 and 14 last year.
