PREP FOOTBALL Kennedy upends N. Falls
Mineral Ridge and Lakeview also recorded wins on opening night.
WARREN -- The Warren JFK High football team got its season off to an electrifying start as it upended Newton Falls 35-23 Friday at Mollenkopf Stadium.
Tony Elzy ignited the Eagles' attack as he rushed for 228 yards on 19 carries, which included touchdown runs of 78, 33 and 3 yards.
The contest, which was delayed because of lightning and heavy rain, saw the Eagles take a 28-10 lead in the first quarter, and the Tigers couldn't recover.
The score was tied 7-7 early in the first quarter, but Elzy's second TD put the Eagles ahead to stay.
The Eagles rushed for 326 yards on 44 attempts and connected on 6-of-9 passes for 78 yards.
The Tigers gained 170 yards rushing and completed 10-of-23 passes for 110 yards.
Mineral Ridge 23, Leetonia 7
MINERAL RIDGE -- Levi Leigh rushed 27 times for 140 yards and three touchdowns to lead Mineral Ridge.
Leigh, who won the Div. IV state championship in the 110 hurdles in the spring, scored on runs of 4, 6 and 21 yards.
After Leigh gave the Rams a 6-0 lead at the break, Leetonia took its only lead, 7-6, on a 2-yard run by Aaron Merrill and his conversion kick.
Junior Nick Civarella kicked the first field goal of his career -- a 40-yard effort -- for a 9-7 lead after three quarters.
Micah Hall also ran 17 times for 60 yards for the Rams, who had more first downs, 11-5.
Lakeview 20, Painesville Harvey 12
CORTLAND -- Nate Province scored on an 84-yard kickoff return and Corey Huffman kicked two field goals as the Bulldogs defeated Harvey in a game delayed until 9 p.m. because of inclement weather.
Province's dramatic run-back and Huffman's field goals from 28 and 23 yards gave Lakeview a 13-6 halftime lead. Matt Kohuth, who had 22 carries for 118 yards, scored on a 5-yard third-quarter run.
Lakeview quarterback Kevin Albert was 9-of-17 for 136 yards and an interception. Trevor Mathews had three catches for 52 yards and Province three catches for 49.
