PA PARKS \ McConnell's Mill
A guided tour and a program about grains are on tap for today at McConnell's Mill State Park, near Portersville, Pa.
Stone Ground Grain Day: Visitors and participants will have a chance to try various types of breads and pies made from stone ground grains bought locally. They also will get a sense of how these items were prepared during the mid-1800s and early 1900s. This event is from noon to 3 p.m. today at the Old Mill.
Through Jenny McConnell's Eyes: Those interested can gather at 12:30 p.m. today in the Mill courtyard for this half-hour costumed guided tour. The milling business, the area around the mill and community life in the 1880s will be discussed from a woman's point of view.
The park also offers two, half-hour, corn-grinding demonstrations beginning at 1 and 3 p.m., as well as two, 45-minute historic grist mill tours that start at 2 and 4 p.m. today. The mill tours take participants through the history of how grain was transformed into flour. Both are Saturdays and Sundays at the Old Mill.
