NEW YORK-PENN LEAGUE Scrappers win to stay in contention for playoffs

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers remained alive in the New York-Penn League playoff race with an 8-2 win over the Jamestown Jammers Saturday in the first game of a doubleheader.
The nightcap wasn't over in time for this edition.
The Scrappers (36-32) entered the day 11/2 games behind Hudson Valley (35-29) in the race for the league's wild card spot.
Hudson Valley was playing at New Jersey (35-32) last evening.
In the opener, the Scrappers collected nine hits but seven went for extra bases.
Leaders
Brett Parker had a double and a home run and Wyatt Toregas collected a double and a homer.
Parker had two RBIs and Toregas drove in three, one with a sacrifice fly.
Mario Matulich homered and Brian Finegan and Chris Gimenez doubled. Gimenez also singled in the balanced attack.
The Scrappers led just 3-2 after five innings then scored twice in the sixth and added three runs in the seventh.
Parker homered in the first inning and Matulich made it 2-1 in the second with his first homer of the season.
Toregas made it 3-2 in the fourth with another home run.
Two pitchers worked effectively for the Scrappers.
Tony Sipp (3-1) pitched the first five innings, yielding just five hits. He struck out 10. Matt Knox replaced Sipp and gave up only one hit in two innings.
Mahoning Valley has seven games remaining this season, all on the road.
