Lockwood United Methodist Church, 4570 Lockwood Blvd., Youngstown, will welcome their new pastor, the Rev. Mike McHale, and his wife, Susan (Sheldon) McHale, with a Rally Day luncheon Sept. 12. Rally Day marks the beginning of the Sunday school year with classes at 9:45 a.m. and church services at 11 a.m. A luncheon will follow at noon.
BENEFIT
There will be a benefit concert at 4 p.m. Sunday, at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 280 Mill Creek Drive, Boardman, on the corner of Glenwood and Mill Creek Drive. Ann Marie Grischow of Austintown had a brain aneurysm in April and is recovering after more than 30 days in the intensive care unit at University Hospitals in Cleveland. She needs assistance with medical expenses. The concert will feature performers from Redeemer Lutheran Church in Austintown. Admission is a free-will offering and will be matched in part by Thrivent for Lutherans. A light supper will follow.

Canton First Friends Church will sponsor "The Hub" coffeehouse from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. each Friday beginning Sept. 3 for young adults ages 18-35. Highpoint will provide music the first week. A $2 cover charge includes free Starbucks coffee. A snack bar is available. The church is at the corner of 55th Street and Market Avenue North in Canton.
Ryan Dobson and Tabitha Bissett will be performing Sept. 18 at Crestview High School. This event is sponsored by East Fairfield United Methodist Church and the Youngstown District Youth Council. Dobson, who specializes in today's younger generation, travels around the country, speaking more than 100 times a year. Bissett has released a CD of her Christian songs and will be ministering to teens and young adults. Doors open at 6:15 p.m. followed by a praise band at 7 p.m. Bissett will perform at 7:30 p.m., and Dobson will speak at 8 p.m. Free refreshments will be served. The event is open to all ages, but is directed toward the youths. Admission is free, but seating is limited. For information and tickets contact the church at (330) 457-2465.
Luella Kreiger of Sykesville, Pa., will portray Mary Magdalene at 7 p.m. Sept. 12 at Clarks Mills United Methodist Church, 3813 Hadley Road, Clarks Mills, Pa. A former registered nurse, Kreiger travels the country each year to portray female biblical characters as part of her ministry.
The Second Baptist Church, 1510 Main Street, Warren, is sponsoring a "Save The Children Block Party" from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. There will be games, contests, a bounce tent, clowns, a DJ, mimes and storytelling. There is no charge for admission. Games and food are free for all children.
The Liberty Presbyterian Church, on Route 304 at Logan Avenue, is beginning a yearlong 200th Anniversary Celebration with Homecoming Sunday on Sept. 5. Communion service will begin at 9:30 a.m. and will feature a choir made up of all who have sung in the church choir at one time or another. Former members and other friends of the church are invited. After the service a brunch will be served in the fellowship hall. There will be entertainment by Rosie Rokus Boelki, a humorist and inspirational speaker. The 200th anniversary committee is planning monthly events.
SCHOOLS
Howland Community Church Preschool celebrated its 35th anniversary by planting a variegated Silver Norway Maple tree near its playground. The preschool is accepting registrations for fall classes, which begin Sept. 7. For information, call (330) 856-7218.
