SOUTH SIDE Shooting leaves one boy injured, suspect arrested
A police officer reported seeing the suspect fire into the air.
YOUNGSTOWN -- A 14-year-old boy was treated at Forum Health Northside Medical Center for a gunshot wound, and an 18-year-old man was taken to Mahoning County jail after a shooting on the city's South Side Thursday evening.
A .22-caliber bullet was removed from the buttocks of Lamar Knox, 14, of East Florida Avenue, who told police he was walking along Pasadena Avenue, near South Avenue, when he heard at least four bangs.
At first, he thought they were firecrackers, but he then looked back and saw a man holding a handgun, the boy told police. As he continued walking, he realized he had been shot, and someone took him to the hospital, where police interviewed him at 9:45 p.m.
Night's events
Police had initially been sent to the vicinity of Pasadena Avenue and Emery and Ash streets at about 8 p.m. in reference to a fight with gunfire. A police officer reported seeing and hearing a man later identified as Donald L. Thompkins, 18, of Willow Court fire randomly into the air near the corner of Pasadena and Ash, but Thompkins fled on foot when he realized the officer had witnessed his actions.
Witnesses who said Thompkins shot at them led police to a residence on Ash Street. As police went upstairs, Thompkins jumped out a second-floor window, police said, adding that they arrested him at Birch and Emery streets after a foot chase.
In the Ash Street residence, police said they found under a couch a .22-caliber handgun Sharon, Pa., police had reported stolen. Police also said they took a report from a woman who said Thompkins had earlier assaulted her.
Thompkins was charged with domestic violence, discharging a firearm within city limits and receiving stolen property.
