OHIO Kmart shooting leaves employee dead, 1 injured

The suspect fled before shooting himself, officials said.
CINCINNATI (AP) -- A man opened fire at a suburban Kmart, killing an employee and injuring a customer before shooting himself, authorities said.
The shootings occurred after an altercation broke out around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in a Kmart in Colerain Township.
Hamilton County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Barnett said the gunman shot the store employee twice and fled the store. Several people chased the suspect, and he fired several shots at them, hitting a customer, Barnett said.
The employee, 22-year-old Paul Heid, of Colerain Township, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a statement from the sheriff's department.
The customer, James P. Daly, 46, of Mount Healthy, was in critical condition at University Hospital, a nursing supervisor at the hospital said early today.
Authorities said they did not know the motive for the shooting.
Police chase
The suspect was running through the store parking lot when a deputy sheriff approached on foot. The suspect fired at the deputy, who returned fire as the man was getting in his car, sheriff's officials said. Both missed.
Eric Amshaoff said he was in the parking lot when he heard about five shots and looked up to see the car "flying backward" in the parking lot.
Police chased the suspect and stopped his car using devices to puncture his tires. When police officers approached the car, they found the suspect dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the sheriff's department statement.
The identity of the suspect, who had a semi-automatic pistol, was being withheld until his family could be notified, authorities said.
Peggy Huffman, of Independence, Ky., said she was driving near the Kmart with her 13-year-old daughter when the fleeing car came at her in her lane.
"He was coming on the wrong side of the road toward me," she said. "He almost hit me head-on with my kid."
Officials at the Kmart corporate office in Troy, Mich., did not immediately return calls to their office Tuesday night.
